The Legacy Walk Opens at Chilliwack
The closure of Canadian Forces Base Chilliwack in the mid-1990s marked the end of an era for the “Home of the Canadian Military Engineers.” The decision, however, set the stage for one of Canada’s most successful military-to-civilian land transformations.
Japanese WW II Incendiary Bombs
The Royal Canadian Engineers played a direct, hands on role in investigating, disarming, and analyzing Japan’s Fu Go balloon bombs that reached Canada during the Second World War. Their work focused on bomb disposal, site investigation, and technical intelligence.
Ripple Rock Explosion
On the morning of 5 April 1958, Canadians gathered around radios and televisions to witness a moment unlike anything they had seen before: the detonation of Ripple Rock in Seymour Narrows, BC. It was, at the time, the largest planned non-nuclear explosion in history. At the centre of this achievement stood Lieutenant Colonel Cyril Burton North (Ret’d), one of the most accomplished and decorated tunnellers the Canadian Engineers ever produced.
