Op CESAR – An Arctic Ice Airfield
A remarkable military operation known as Operation CESAR took place in Canada’s far North in March 1983. This mission involved a daring airborne drop by 2 Combat Engineer Regiment (2 CER) onto the polar ice near the North Pole. The operation aimed to create an ice runway to support scientific research on the Alpha Ridge - a submerged mountain chain that stretches from Ellesmere Island to the Siberian continental shelf.
CFSME 1988 Demolition Accident
On 20 June 1988, the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering at Canadian Forces Base Chilliwack, British Columbia, suffered the deadliest training accident in its history when a demolition charge detonated prematurely during a training session. The session involved 29 students and seven instructors. Six military engineering students were killed, and several others were injured. Killed were: Capt J.W. Best, Lt M.D. Aucoin, 2Lt K.J. Wilkinson, OCdt K.R. Gawne, OCdt W.C. Sutton, and OCdt W.J. Whitley.
The Chilliwack Saluting Base is a Memorial
A restored Saluting Base at the former Canadian Forces Base Chilliwack was unveiled as a memorial and dedicated in October 2013. This project represented a coordinated community, military, and heritage preservation effort that unfolded from late 2012 to October 2013.
