The first Bailey Bridge built by the Allies under enemy fire during the Second World War was constructed in Sicily by the 3rd Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers, at Leonforte on the night of 21/22 July 1942.
The Bailey Bridge was used widely by Allied armies in Italy and Northwest Europe during the Second World War. Over 2500 Bailey bridges were built in the Italian campaign. The Bailey Bridge was a revolution in military engineering, enabling hand assembly to span a gap. Easily transportable, a small bridge could be erected in three hours by 40 men.
The CMEA is pleased to announce the names of this year's twelve CMEA Memorial Bursary recipients.
