We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant Peter Charles Fuller (Ret’d) in hospital in Weston, ON on 16 February 2009 in his 93^rd year.

Peter was born in Tetraville, Montreal, QC.  He attended Montreal High School and was a graduate of McGill University in 1938 (Civil Engineering).  He was a WW II veteran who served overseas as a Lieutenant with the Royal Canadian Engineers 1942-1945, including involvement in D-Day.  He had a long career with Canadian Pacific Railways both before and after the war.  He was a dedicated volunteer dating back to his university days with the McGill Daily newspaper as a student, and later with the Lions Club, Anglican Houses and St. Philip's Anglican Church. He was a proud supporter of the Toronto Children's Chorus.

A memorial service will be held on 21 February at St. Philip's Anglican Church, 25 St. Philips Road, Weston at 1:00 p.m. Donations may be made to St. Philip's Anglican Church and McGill University. ^{{gdNov2016kh}}

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Gerald Allan “Joe” Doak, CD (Ret’d) peacefully in Ottawa, ON on 14 February 2009 at the age of 80.

Joe served with the Canadian Military Engineers. After leaving the army he worked for Canada Post.

Visitation will be at the St. Laurent Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 1200 Ogilvie Road on 18 February from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m.  A funeral service will be held in the Chapel on 19 February at 12:30 p.m. with interment at the Canadian Forces National Military Cemetery Beechwood.  Donations may be made to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.  ^{{gdNov2016kh}}

We regret to advise that Captain Forrest Lynn Chapman (Ret'd) passed away peacefully on 9 February 2009 at his home in Agassiz after a 12-year battle with Parkinson's disease.

Forrest was born in Estevan, SK in 1929 and joined the Canadian Army with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in 1947. After a short period he left to pursue the carpentry trade and then joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1954. He served with the Engineers until 1989 in such locations as Germany, Egypt and Cyprus. After retirement he worked at CFB Chilliwack first as a carpenter and then as a building inspector, retiring in 1997.

A celebration of life was held at the Vedder Legion Branch 280 on 17 February 2009.

We regret to advise the death of Sapper Cecil George Dennie (Ret’d) peacefully at the Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital on 2 February 2009 in his 87^th year.

Cecil was a veteran of the Second World War and served in the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was a 60 year member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #34 in Orillia.

Cremation has taken place. We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Sean David Greenfield in the Zhari district west of Kandahar City, Afghanistan on 31 January 2009. he was 25 years of age.

Sapper Greenfield was a Combat Engineer in 24 Field Engineer Squadron, 2 Combat Engineer Regiment, serving with the 3^rd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group. Sapper Greenfield was born in Pinawa, MB and grew up there. Petawawa, ON became his new hometown after the family moved there when his father began work at AECL's Chalk River Laboratories. After graduation from high school in Petawawa in 2001, Sean attended Fanshawe College of Applied Arts and Technology in London ON and graduated in 2005 in Graphic Design.

Sean joined the Canadian Forces in December 2005 and, after completing his military engineer training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering, was posted to 2 Combat Engineer Regiment at CFB Petawawa in February 2007. While training for deployment, in 2007 he was selected for and completed Combat Diver training. Sean deployed on his first overseas tour with 24 Field Squadron in September 2008 as an Engineer Field Section Driver.

Visitation for family and close friends of Spr Greenfield will be at Malcolm, Deavitt and Binhammer Funeral Home at 141 Renfrew Street, Pembroke on Friday, 6 January 1900 to 2100 hrs. Dress is Service Dress with Ribbons or equivalent civilian attire. The Commander Land Forces Central Area will privately present the Memorial Crosses, Memorial Scroll and Memorial Bar at 1830 hrs before the visitation.. Funeral and Memorial Service will be at CFB Petawawa RC Chapel (St Francis of Assisi) Saturday, 7 February at 1100 hrs. Dress: Service Dress with Medals. Reception to follow at the Twin Rivers Golf Club next to the chapel. Interment will be Beechwood National Military Cemetery, Ottawa on Monday, 9 February at 1400 hrs. We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Arnold Benedict Culliton (Ret’d) on 31 January 2009 at the St, Catharines General Hospital in St. Catharines ON at the age of 95 years.

Arnold served in the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Engineers from 1942 until 1946.  He was a member of the Masonic Seymour Lodge Branch No 277 in St. Catharines.  He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion H.T. Church Branch #24 in St. Catharines.

Visitation will take place at the Hulse & English Funeral Home & Chapel, 75 Church St. on 3 February from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m..  A funeral service will be held in the chapel on 4 February at 11:00 a.m. with interment to follow at Victoria Lawn Cemetery.  Donations may be made to the Niagara Peninsula Children's Centre or the Children's Hospital of Western Ontario in London, ON.   ^{{dcOct2017gd} [zpp, zsd, zcc]}

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Leonard Martin “Len” Espetveidt (Ret’d) of Marwayne, AB on 30 January 2009 at the age of 91 years.

Len was a veteran of the Second World War. He enlisted in Victoria BC in January 1941 and received his basic training there.  He was assigned to the Royal Canadian Engineers and went to England with the 5^th Canadian Armoured Division Engineers. Badly wounded in May 1944 in Italy on the Hitler Line, he was sent to England for recuperation. Len then came home to Canada in September 1944 aboard the hospital ship Princess Margaret and was discharged in December 1944 in Calgary.

A funeral service will be held at the Marwayne Alliance Church on 4 February with interment following at the Marwayne Cemetery.  Donations may be made to the Lloydminster Regional Hospital Foundation, Lloydminster SK or a charity of one’s choice. 

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Arthur Albert Desautels (Ret’d) at the Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg MB on 26 January 2009 at the age of 86 years.

Arthur enlisted in the Royal Canadian Engineers at the age of 17 years.  He was a veteran of the Second World War and served overseas.  After the war, he returned home and worked first as a miner in Ontario, then as an auto mechanic in St. Jean Baptiste and Keewatin, ON. He later settled in St. Vital, MB.  Arthur was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #100 in Winnipeg.

We regret to advise of the death of Major Alan Stanley Derrick, CD (Ret'd) peacefully at Providence Care in Kingston on 24 January 2009, in his 79^th year.

Alan was born in Eston, SK and attended high school in Kingston, ON. He graduated from The Royal Military College of Canada in 1954 and from University of McGill in 1955 with a degree in Civil Engineering. In his first posting to Chilliwack he became a rifle marksman. He was the winner of the Queen's Medal for Champion Rifle Shots of the Armed Forces and was the high aggregate rifle marksman for 1956 and 1957 including the Bisley Team. Following a posting to Ottawa and instructing on Militia staff courses in Kingston, AI served as a military observer in Damascus and Jerusalem with UNTSO and later with the Operations Staff at Palestine Headquarters following the Six Day Arab/Israeli War. There followed a series of postings to Toronto, Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering, and with Militia Staff in Hamilton involving Special Projects, Construction Engineering, Cadet Liaison and Recruiting.

AI retired in 1985, living first in Trenton and later in Kingston. Known for his dedication to family, friends and community. He was a strong supporter of the Canadian Military Engineer Family.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Family will receive friends on Tuesday 27 January from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at James Reid Funeral Home (1900 John Counter Blvd.). A celebration of Alan's life will take place on Wednesday 28 January at 11:00 am at St. Luke's Anglican Church, 236 Nelson Street, Kingston. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Parkinson Society Canada or your charity of choice.

We regret to announce the passing of Ronald "Bugs" Campbell at the age of 75 on 23 January 2009 at the Glace Bay Health Care Facility.

Born in Glace Bay, Ron served with the Canadian Military Engineers for 28 years in locations that included peacekeeping in Egypt and Lebanon. After retiring from the Canadian Forces he served as a Commissionaire.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Sunday, 25 January from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. At Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, NS [849-7520]. Funeral services will be held Monday, 26 January at 2:00 p.m. At St. John's Church. Burial in St. John's Cemetery at a later date. We regret to advise of the death of CWO Jake Froese (Ret'd), a resident of the Birchwood Retirement Home in Chilliwack, on 21 January 2009 at the age of 88 years.

Jake was born in Herbert, SK, He served in the Royal Canadian Engineer as Foreman of Works, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer  Earlier in his career, Jake served in Korea.

Jake is buried in the Chilliwack Crematories. There was no public service.

We regret to advise of the death of William “Bill” James Greenslade peacefully at the Montfort Hospital, Ottawa ON, on 16 January 2009 in his 93^rd year. 

Bill was born and raised in Toronto ON.  He was a WW II veteran having enlisted in 1939 as a member of the Royal Canadian Engineers and serving for over five years in Italy, Northwest Europe and the UK.  Upon demobilisation, Bill joined the Department of Veterans Affairs working at the Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto where he worked for the next 29 years.  Bill retired to the Barrie ON area--eventually moving to Ottawa in 2005.

Visitation will be at the Westboro Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 403 Richmond Road, Ottawa on 20 January.  Funeral services will be held in Barrie at the Chapel of Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Homes, 201 Minet’s Point Road on 22 January.  Interment to be in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Innisfil ON.  Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.  Condolences, donations or tributes may be made at www.tubmanfuneralhomes.com. ^{{gdMar2016kh}}

We regret to advise of the death of Chief Petty Officer Lee Palmer Bushen (Ret’d) of Upper Sackville, NS at Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building in Halifax, NS on 15 January 2009 at the age of 88 years.

Lee was born in West Dublin NS. He began his naval career as an ordinary seaman in the Merchant Navy in 1937. He was a veteran of the Second World War, enlisting in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1939 as an Able Seaman. He advanced to Leading Seaman, to Petty Officer and finally to Chief Petty Officer First Class, Master Gunner. During the war, Lee served aboard many ships; Lady Hawkins, HMCS Assiniboine, HMCS Skeena, HMCS Avalon, HMCS Stadacona, HMCS Cornwallis, the armed yacht HCMS Hochelaga, the frigate HMCS Stettler. 

On release from the Navy, he enrolled in a carpentry course in 1945. He worked on several ships as a carpenter and later became a self-employed contractor, building houses in Liverpool as well as Cape Breton. He moved his family moved to Cape Breton in 1954. While there, he served as a Sapper in the 45^th Field Squadron, Royal Canadian Engineers in Sydney, NS. He closed his carpentry business after many years and worked for Reid's Building Supplies in Sydney until his retirement. He moved to Upper Sackville in 2004 to be near the rest of the family. He was a member of the Cape Breton Naval Veterans' Association and the Royal Canadian Legion.

Visitation will be held from 2 until 4 PM and from 7 until 9 PM on Sunday, 18 January in the Atlantic Funeral Home in Lower Sackville. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on 19 January at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Beaverbank, NS with a reception to follow in the church hall. Burial will be in the Oakridge Memory Gardens, Lower Sackville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the QE II Health Sciences Centre Foundation, Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building Garden Fund, Church of the Good Shepherd Memorial Fund or charity of your choice.
 

We regret to advise of the death of Charles Ira “Charlie” Farrow in the East Cumberland Lodge in Pugwash, NS on 11 January 2009 at the age of 90 years.

Charlie was born in Oxford, NS but moved with his family to Malagash at an early age.  After high school, he worked at the Malagash salt mine until the outbreak of the Second World War. Charlis was a veteran of the Second World War and served overseas with the 1^st Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers.

Following the war Charlie worked as a licensed steamfitter in Hamilton, ON and later in the Halifax area. He also worked for the city of Halifax and taught evening classes for the Department of Labour as well as at Vocational Schools in the area.

Charlie took several teaching and administration courses at Dalhousie University, Purdue University and the Institute of Technology in Moncton, N.B. He was Vice-Principal at Kings County Vocational School in Kentville where he finished his last two years there as acting Principal before retiring in 1974.

During retirement Charlie was active in the Malagash Community devoting time to several projects, developing land, and writing two books on the history of Malagash and the salt mine community. He was Past Master and Life Member of Wallace Masonic Lodge and Past President and Life Member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 97in Malagash. During his later years, he enjoyed painting tall ships, seascapes, animals, and birds.

The Royal Canadian Legion will conduct a tribute service at 1 p.m. on 16 January 16, in Coulter's Funeral Home in Tatamagouche, NS followed immediately by a celebration of Charlie's life with interment in MacKenzie Cemetery in Malagash. Family flowers only by request. We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant-Colonel Julius Joel Wolfe on 10 January 2009.

Born in Montreal in 1917, Colonel Wolfe was educated in Montreal public schools and majored in Agricultural Engineering at Macdonald College, School of Agriculture. He enlisted as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers in October 1941 and was commissioned as a Lieutenant a year later. Lieutenant Wolfe served with the 738 Army Troop Company, Royal Engineers and in Italy with the 643 Field Company, Royal Engineers 1944-45. He was promoted to Captain in June 1945.

In 1953 Colonel Wolfe enlisted in 3 Field Engineer Regiment (Militia). Promoted to Major in 1954, he was appointed Second-in-Command in 1961. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, he was appointed Commanding Officer 1963-66. During this tour he commanded the military engineer operation to defuse and destroy a number of terrorist bombs placed in mail boxes throughout the city of Westmount. Colonel Wolfe was appointed Honorary Lieutenant Colonel of 3 Field Engineer Regiment in 1992 and was subsequently appointed Honorary Colonel of the Regiment in 1995.

Colonel Wolfe formed the Jewish War Veterans of Canada and was elected First National Commander 1968-1972. In 1972 he was elected President (Eastern Region), retiring in 1979 as Honorary President of the Eastern Region. He was a member of Bnai-Brith of Canada and the United Services Club Montreal for more than 30 years. Colonel Wolfe was an active member and supporter of the Military Engineers Association of Canada. He was awarded the 125^th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal in 1993 and was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2000.

We regret to advise that Roy Barnes passed peacefully at home in Revelstoke on 10 January 2009 at 90 years old.

Born in Portsmouth UK, Roy spent 16 years in the British Army, four of which were in Stalag VIII in Poland as a Prisoner of War. Immigrating to Canada in 1953, he joined the band of the Corps of Royal Canadian Engineers and was stationed in Chilliwack, BC. Roy retired to Revelstoke in 1990 where he enjoyed model boat building, fishing and bowling.

There will be no formal funeral service.

We regret to advise of the death of Reverend Arthur Sidney Allerton on 9 January 2009 at the Grey Bruce Health Services in Owen Sound, ON in his 86^th year.

Arthur was born in Scarborough, ON.  He was a veteran of the Second World War and served with the 1^st Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers in the Mediterranean Theatre.  After the war he graduated from the Ontario College of Art in Industrial Design in 1949. He later answered a call to serve his church in the parishes of Manvers, Bethany and Lloydtown-Schomberg, all in Ontario.

A Funeral Service will be held at St. George's Anglican Church in Owen Sound on 17 January at 2:00 pm.  Visitation will be for one hour prior to service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. George's Restoration Fund or the charity of one’s choice. Master Warrant Officer Einar Elverum, MMM, CD (Ret'd) passed peacefully in his 74^th year on 8 January 2009.

We regret to advise of the death of "Des" Desjardins on 8 January 2009 approaching his 70^th year.

Des was a 5^th Intake, RCE Sapper Apprentice. In retirement he was a strong supporter of the activities of the Retired Sappers and the Sapper Apprentices.

A memorial Mass followed by a reception will be held on 18 April 2009 at 1:00 PM at St. Sailes Parish 6610 Balmoral Street. Burnaby BC.

We regret to advise the death of Denis R. Devereaux on 7 January 2009 of Cambridge ON at the age of 76 years. Denis was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was a member of the Galt Branch #121 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Cambridge.

We regret to advise of the death of Kenneth Earl “Barney” Barnett peacefully at the St. Michael's Health Care Centre in Lethbridge, AB on 6 January 2009 at the age of 80 years.

Barney was born in Kennedy, SK.  He was a veteran of the Second World War who served in the Royal Canadian Engineers.  After the war, having graduated from Garbutt Business College in Lethbridge, he began a successful 42-year career in the accounting department at the Lethbridge Herald newspaper.  Barney was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion General Stewart Branch #4 in Lethbridge and a member of the Lethbridge Senior Citizen’s Organization.

 A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on 12 January at the Martin Brothers Riverview Chapel. Donations may be made to St. Michael’s Health Care Foundation, Lethbridge or a charity of one’s choice.  

We regret to advise the death of Joseph Henry Komus on 6 January 2009 at Calvary Place Personal Care Home in Winnipeg MB at the age of 93 years.

Joe was born to German immigrant parents in Winnipeg and was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Second World War. After the war, he had a 30-year career with Manitoba Hydro in the finance department including many years as Cash Receipts Supervisor. Joe retired in 1978.

We regret to advise that Warrant Officer Class 2 Harry Richard Lownds  passed away peacefully on Friday, January 2, 2009, in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII in Halifax at age 88.

Born in Halifax, Harry had dedicated his career to the Royal Canadian Air Force as a firefighter, a profession he loved, retiring after 32 years of service. He was active in politics at various capacities. He was a handyman loving the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He had a passion for horses and was once known for horse ice racing. In his retirement, Harry thoroughly enjoyed managing the Dartmouth Trap and Skeet Club. 

A memorial celebration of Harry's life was be held on Monday, January 5, at 1 p.m. in Bradford Hall, Parkland Estates, Fairfax Dr., Halifax, with a reception to follow. We regret to advise of the death of Sidney “Sid” David Weary peacefully at Ste-Anne's Veterans' Hospital in Pointe Claire, QC on 1 January 2009 at the age of 87 years.

Sid was a veteran of the Second World War who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers overseas.  Upon his return to Canada he joined the staff of Ste-Anne’s hospital where he ran the woodworking department for thirty-four years in rehabilitating fellow veterans.  Sid was an active member of the community for over forty years.

Visitation will take place at Collins Clarke, 222 autoroute 20 (Exit Cartier), Pointe-Claire, QC on 8 January from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM.  The funeral service will be held on 9 January at 2:00 PM at Christ Church, 455 Church Street, Beaconsfield, QC.  Donations may be made to the War Amps of Quebec or to the West Island Palliative Care Residence.  ^{{gdApr2017dc} [zsd, zsp]}

We regret to advise of the death of Stanley Molinski peacefully at Evergreen Residential Care House in North Vancouver, BC on 31 December 2009 at the age of 90 years.

Stanley was born in Brokenhead, MB and raised on the family farm before heading west - working his way across the prairies during the Depression. He was a veteran of the Second World War who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  After demobilization he settled in North Vancouver in 1946 where he started Stan's Hardwood Floors and developed a reputation as an outstanding craftsman, laying hardwood floors in hundreds of homes on the North Shore.

We regret to advise of the death of Douglas Zeran on 28 December 2008 in the Woodland Villa in Long Sault, ON at the age of 83 Years.

Douglas was a veteran of the Second World War. He served in the 5^th Field Company of the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was a member of the Heather Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion in Finch, ON.

We regret to advise of the death of Captain Ralph Mahler, CD who passed away on 27 December 2008 at the age of 55.

Born in Val d'Or, Quebec, Ralph graduated from the University of Toronto in Industrial Engineering 1976 and enrolled into the Canadian Military Engineers the same year. Ralph was a Regular Force member of the Canadian Military Engineering family for 30 years with service in Canadian Forces Base North Bay, Canadian Forces Station Lowther, Ottawa, Chilliwack, Gander and Yellowknife. He retired in 1994 in Yellowknife and joined the Reserves there in 2004 with Joint Task Force North as the Engineering Officer (JTFN/CFNA Engr O).

A Funeral Service was held on 30 December at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 4909-52^nd Street, Yellowknife. Those wishing to make a donation in Capt Mahler's name may consider the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada or the Chief of Defence Staff's Military Families Fund. ^{{kh7 Sep2015}}

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Gregory John Kruse, CD, a Combat Engineer from 2 Combat Engineer Regiment based in Petawawa, ON. Sergeant Kruse was on his third overseas tour of duty when he was killed in Afghanistan on 27 December 2008 when an explosive device was detonated while he was conducting security operations in the Panjwayi District.

Originally from Gaspé, QC, his family considered New Brunswick home as he had been stationed at CFB Gagetown for most of his career. Born in 1968 in Campbellton, NB, Gregory joined the Canadian Forces in 1989 and completed his recruit training at the Canadian Forces Recruit School. Upon completion of his basic military engineer training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering (CFSME) Canadian forces Base Chilliwack, he was posted to 4 Engineer Support Regiment (4 ESR) CFB Gagetown, NB.

Sergeant Kruse's tour of duty with 4 ESR lasted for 11 years where he progressed to the rank of Master Corporal. During this time he deployed with elements of 4 ESR on three occasions. The first, in 1994, was a two-month surge to Croatia in support of 1 Combat Engineer Regiment to undertake mine clearance operations. Sgt Kruse also deployed in 1999 for a six-month mission to Bosnia in support of OP PALLADIUM and in 2001 to Eritrea with Task Force East Africa where he was employed as a Water Supply Detachment Commander.

In 2002 Sgt Kruse was posted to CFSME for a five-year period as a Conventional Munitions, Mine Warfare and Demolition Instructor and eventually became the Second-in-Command of the Demolitions Cell. He was posted to 2 Combat Engineer Regiment in 2007 where he was employed as a Section Commander with 4 Troop, 24 Field Squadron. Sgt Kruse deployed to Afghanistan in August 2008.

Funeral and Memorial Service will be held at CFB Petawawa RC Chapel (St Francis of Assisi) on 5 January 2008 at 1100 hrs. Dress is Service Dress with Medals. Reception to follow in RC Chapel Annex. We regret to advise that Tommy "Paddy" Devlin, formerly of Chilliwack, passed away on 25 December 2008 in Vernon, BC after a long battle with Alzheimer's.

Tommy was a Sapper who became a Cook serving in many RCE and CME units. After retiring, Paddy was the Cleaning Supervisor at CFB Chilliwack. Paddy was an active member of the Vedder Legion, Kiwanis and the All Sappers' Church.

There will be a memorial service for Paddy Devlin at Vedder Legion, Saturday 24 January 2009 at 10:00 AM with a light lunch following the service.

We regret to advise that John Alexander Aylmer Morrison, CD, BASc (Civil) died on 18 December 2008, in the Ottawa General Hospital.

John served during WW II as a Flight Lieutenant with the Royal Canadian Air Force where he served in the North Atlantic and Burma. After the war, John enlisted in the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1948 where, among his assignments, he served in Korea, Palestine and National Defence Headquarters. In 1968, Major Morrison retired from the Canadian Forces and pursued a new career with the Treasury Board until 1984.

A Service in Memory of John will be held on Monday, 22 December at Pinecrest Remembrance Chapel (2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa) at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ottawa General Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.

We regret to advise that Warrant Officer Kenneth Freeman McLachlan (Ret'd) passed away peacefully on 18 December 2008.

Born in 1919 in Portage La Prairie, MB, Ken was a WWII veteran who subsequently served with the Royal Canadian Engineers and the Canadian Military Engineers in units including 1 Field Squadron, 2 Field Squadron, 1 Field Park Squadron and in the electrical trade in Construction Engineer units until his retirement in 1971. Ken was devoted to his family, his country and his church. He was a familiar figure on the Salvation Army kettles for many years.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, 28 December 2008 at 7:00 pm at Woodlawn Mt. Cheam Funeral Home, 45865 Hocking Ave. Chilliwack, BC. Funeral service will be held at 1:30 pm on Monday, 29 December 2008 in the Chapel of Woodlawn Mt. Cheam Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Chilliwack Cemetery on Little Mountain. We regret to advise that Major General Norman George Trower, MBE, CD (Ret'd) died suddenly and peacefully at home on 15 December 2008 at the age of 84.

Norman was born in Greenock, Scotland in 1924 to Grace Kidd and Norman Trower. He came to Canada in 1935 and settled in Toronto. He was a member of the Canadian Officers Training Corps when he graduated in 1942 from the University of Toronto with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He joined the Canadain Army Active Service Force on 5 July 1943 and served until just after the Second World War being released on 8 October 1945. He rejoined the Army in September 1948 and had a very long and successful military career with the Royal Canadian Engineers.

Norman served in Korea where he became a Member of the Order of the British Empire for his actions. In 1956 he commanded the Middle East Detachment, RCE of the first United Nations mission in Gaza and subsequently commanded 2 Field Squadron 1957-59. He also served with the United Nations in Cyprus and was Military Attaché to the High Commission in Pakistan. His final assignment was as Associate Assistant Deputy Minister (Policy). After the military, he started his own management business.

We regret to advise that Harry Dawson Horwood died on 10 December 2008 at Burnaby, BC at the age of 87.

Born in Vancouver, Harry graduated from Lord Byng High School and then joined 6^th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers and served overseas. After the war, he settled in North Vancouver. He finished his working career as Membership Manager, Vancouver Board of Trade. For many years he was an active member of Kiwanis.

We regret to advise of the sudden death of Norman Arthur Dalman in Selkirk, MB on 3 December 2008 at the age of 88 years.

Norman was born and raised in Selkirk. He was a veteran of the Second World War and served in the 20^th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers in France, Belgium and Holland. He returned to Holland on many trips after the war and was present in Arnhem attending the dedication of the Operation BERLIN Monument. The 20^th Field Company, along with the 23^rd Field Company, participated in Operation BERLIN in evacuating Allied paratroopers from the enemy side of the river. 

After the war, Norman married and lived for 60 years in Netley, MB before moving to Selkirk. He was employed by the federal government working at RCAF Station Gimli and later the Minto Armouries in Winnipeg, MB.  Norman retired from the public service at the age of 65 but, still being active, he began working at the Gimli Lakeside Camp for the Disabled. He was also involved with his community serving as a school trustee for the Netley Lake School and was a 42-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion Selkirk Branch #42.

A remembrance of Norman's life will be held on 9 December 2008 at 1:00 PM at Gilbart's Funeral Home in Selkirk. A private family interment will take place at Saint George Wakefield Anglican Cemetery. We regret to advise that Warrant Officer Gordon Edward Gosse, MMM, CD (Ret'd) passed away peacefully in Chilliwack, BC on 2 December 2008 in his 60^th year.

Gordon joined the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry  in 1967 and served as an Infantryman and then as an Administrative Clerk until his retirement in 1995 at the rank of Warrant Officer. He was the Chief Clerk at CFSME 1989 -1992 where he did much to help all who passed through the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering. Gordon developed a close connection with the Engineers and would often ask after individuals. For his stellar work with CFSME he was nominated for the Order of Military Merit and was invested in the Order of Military Merit (Member) in 1992.

Gordon was a member of the Falls Golf & Country Club and a 4^th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Henry Maurice Assembly 2256 in Chilliwack.

Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Chilliwack on Saturday 6 December 2008. In lieu of floral tributes, donations to the Chilliwack Public Library would be appreciated.    ^{{gdMar2016kh}}

We regret to advise that Donald "Danny" Laurence McNeil passed away peacefully at St. Joseph's Health Centre, Toronto on 27 November 2008.

Danny served with the Royal Canadian Engineers for six years during WWII and was a proud 62-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He had recently celebrated his 90^th birthday with his family.

Service was at the G.H. Hogle Funeral Home Mimico Chapel in Etobicoke on 3 December 2008. Donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.

We regret to advise that G. William "Bill" Rector of Saint John NB died 15 November 2008 in Saint John Regional Hospital at the age of 88 years.

Bill was born in New Salem NB and was a plumber by trade. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with the Royal Canadian Engineers in the 1^st Division in Sicily, Italy, Belgium, and Holland. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 14 in Saint John.

In keeping with Bill's wishes, all services will be private. For those who wish, remembrances to any charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family.

We regret to advise that Warrant Officer Harold Orland McDonald (Ret'd) of Junction Road, Springhill, passed away at his residence on 13 November 2008 at the age of 79 years.

Born in Springhill, Harold served in the Korean War with the Royal Canadian Regiment. Returning to Springhill, he worked in the coal mines until 1956 when he re-enlisted in the Canadian Army with the Royal Canadian Engineers. He retired as Warrant Officer after serving 28 years as a Field Engineer with the Canadian Military Engineers.

Following his retirement, Harold worked at All Saints Hospital for another 15 years. He was a member of Atlantic Retired Sapper Association and The Korean War Vets Association, member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 17, Springhill and the Cumberland Lodge # 5, Knights of Pythias.

Visitation will be held 2:00 - 4:00 pm & 7:00 - 9:00 pm on Sunday, 16 November 2008 in A. H. Brown Funeral Home, Springhill, from where the Funeral Service will be held 2:00 pm Monday, 17 November. We regret to advise that Kenneth Eugene "Ken" Hudson passed away on Sunday, 8 November 2008 at the age of 89 in Port Wade, Annapolis County, NS.

Born at Parker's Cove, Annapolis Co., NS, he was WW II veteran who served for three years in Europe with the Royal Canadian Engineers. A carpenter, he worked as a foreman at CFB Cornwallis and in the home shop that he loved. Ken was a founding member of Habitation Baptist Church, Port Royal, where he tirelessly served as Deacon, Sunday school teacher and Choir member.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, 11 November 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. At Kaulbach Funeral Home, Annapolis Royal. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, 12 November in Habitation Baptist Church, Port Royal, followed by interment in The Garden of Peace Cemetery, Victoria Beach. We regret to advise that Gordon Frank Henry McNab of Dartmouth, NS, passed away suddenly on Friday, 7 November 2008 in Glades Lodge Nursing Home.

Gordon served in the Royal Canadian Engineers from July 1942 until September 1945. After the war, he worked for the federal government for over 32 years.

The family will receive visitors 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. Wednesday, 12 November with a memorial service to be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, 13 November in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. We regret to advise of the death of Olga Shandro, (nee Russ) of Vegreville, AB on 29 October 2008 at the age of 83.

Olga supported the Royal Canadian Engineers in the 1945-1946 period as a member of the Canadian Women’s Army Corps.

We regret to advise of the death of John Brownell at the Moncton, NB Hospital on 24 October 2008 at the age of 91 years.

John was born in Baie Verte, NB. After his schooling, he was employed by Canadian Canners Ltd., Middleton, NS until joining the Army in 1940. He was a veteran of the Second World War who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers. After demobilization, John joined the Canadian National Railways (CNR) Sales and Service Department and worked in various locations including Halifax NS, Campbellton NB, and Sydney NS. By the time he retired he was manager of Freight Sales and Services for the Moncton Area. John was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #6 in Moncton. He was an original member of the Mount Royal United Church in Moncton, a member of the first Board of Stewards and at the official opening of the present church was a Church Elder. John was a member of the CNR Supervisors Association and the CNR Pensioners Association.

We regret to advise of the death of Gordon J. “Gord” Fleming on 23 October 2008 at the Sault Area Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, ON in his 76^th year.

Gord served in the Royal Canadian Engineers.  He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and the Sault Ste. Marie Branch #25 of the Royal Canadian Legion.

We regret to advise that Lieutenant Colonel Albert A. Loveridge CD (Ret'd) died on 17 October 2008 in Chilliwack, BC at the age of 88.

Born in Victoria, BC, he joined the Canadian Army in 1940 with the British Columbia Regiment. Al later transferred to the Royal Canadian Engineers with 6^th Field Company where he reached the rank of sergeant. He completed Officer Training corps training in 1943 and then transferred to the Royal Regiment of Canada. He fought overseas during WW II with the 2^nd Canadian Division in Normandy, Belgium, Holland and Germany in 1944-45.

After the war, Al joined the Permanent Force and returned to the Royal Canadian Engineers. He served with 57^th Independent Field Squadron 1950 - 1951 after which he was posted to the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering (RCSME) as Assistant Chief Instructor. After attending Army Staff College in 1953, Al became Adjutant, 1 Field Engineer Regiment 1953 - 1956. Major Loveridge commanded 2 Field Squadron 1959-1962 and was a Team Officer with the Military Component Canadian Delegation International of the Commission of Control and Supervision in South Vietnam.

Following a position with the Office of Chief Engineer, Army Headquarters, Al was promoted Lieutenant Colonel in 1965 and posted to RCSME as the Chief Instructor. Upon the accidental death of Commandant, Colonel Potts, he assumed the position of Commandant during Summer 1968 and served another short tour as the first Commandant, Canadian Forces School of Engineering Commandant in January 1969, after which he retired.

Following his retirement from the Canadian Armed Forces in 1969, Al launched into a second career in education. He headed the experimental 'NewStart' programme in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, and then was President of the Assiniboine Community College in Brandon, Manitoba, in 1971-85. Al and Ann spent two years in the Seychelles with the Canadian International Development Agency, where Al was Principal of the Seychelles Polytechnic, before their second retirement. They later moved back to Chilliwack to be closer to their many old Army friends and their family.

Al retired but did not slow down. He was an active Rotarian for many years and was involved with many programmes in Chilliwack and district. He was also active in seniors organisations, including One Voice and the Federal Superannuates National Association. Al gave his support to the Legion and Retired Sappers and Military Engineer Associations, and took a keen interest in preserving the history of the military in Vedder Crossing and Chilliwack, and British Colombia generally. Al's contributions were acknowledged in his receipt of the Centennial Medal in 1967 and the Jubilee Medal 1975.

Funeral Service will take place at Carman United Church at 7258 Vedder Road, Sardis at 1400hrs on 24 October. Reception to follow at the Area Support Unit Mess on the Base. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Diabetes Society.

We regret to advise of the death of Elmer Louis Thibodeau of Killam, AB on 16 October 2008 at the age of 89 years.

Born in Saskatchewan, Elmer served in the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Engineers as part of the 2^nd Canadian Division in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany.

We regret to advise that Arthur Herbert (Bert) Ralfs passed away peacefully on 6 October 2008 at the Veterans Broadmead Lodge in Victoria, BC.

Born in Victoria in 1912, Bert started his career as a stock-boy posting the ups and downs on the boards in Victoria. He later joined the BC government as an apprentice draftsman and progressed to becoming a British Columbia and a Dominion Land Surveyor and spent much time on survey crews. Bert served overseas during WW II in France, Germany and Holland with Field Survey in the Royal Canadian Engineers. After the war Bert advanced to become the Director of Surveys and Mapping in the former federal Department of Lands, Forests and Water Resources and to become the Surveyor General of British Columbia from 1968 until his retirement in 1975. In July 1969 he was appointed as a member of the British Columbia-Yukon-Northwest Territories Boundary Commission.

Funeral Service will be held 2:00 pm 16 October at First Memorial Funeral Services, 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC, V8Y 1B4. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the SPCA.

We regret to advise that Hugh Brennan passed away peacefully on 4 October 2008 in his 88^th year.

Hugh was born in Vancouver spent his early life there and in Britannia Mines, BC. He served in the Royal Canadian Engineers during WWII. After the war, he attended the University of Toronto from which he graduated with a BSc in Mining and Engineering in 1951.

Visitations on 4 October at the R.S. Kane Funeral Home, 6150 Yonge Street Toronto. A Funeral Mass will be held on 8 October at Blessed Trinity Roman Catholic Church, 3220 Bayview Avenue, Toronto. We regret to advise the death of Sapper Donald Levi Green (Ret'd) of Melfort SK on 4 October 2008 at the age of 85 years.

Don was born in Gronlid SK. He was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Second World War. After the war, he married and farmed near Brooksby SK and raised a family of four. In 1977, Don moved to Melfort where he was a Life Member of the Melfort Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

We regret to advise of the death of Roy Ashton suddenly at the Cardiac Care Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg on 2 October 2008 at the age of 86 years. 

Roy was born in Brooklyns, MB.  He was a WW II veteran who served overseas with Royal Canadian Engineers.  After the war, Roy worked for the Canadian Pacific Weston Shops as a machinist until his retirement.  He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Winnipeg South Osborne Branch #252.
