We regret to advise of the death of Chief Warrant Officer Alan Robert Nixon, MMM, CD (Ret’d)
of Stonewall MB, on 14 November 2025 just short of his 81st birthday.
Al was born on the family farm in Gordon MB and spent his early years in that community. His education started at the East Rosser School and he finished his education at Stonewall Collegiate when the family moved to Brooklands.
Al joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1965. His first posting was to Rivers MB and he saw service in many countries and most provinces and territories in Canada over his 33-year career with the Canadian Military Engineers. His career postings included Portage la Prairie MB, Chilliwack BC, Cold Lake AB and Winnipeg MB.
Al worked at rebuilding and repairing infrastructure for the Canadian Armed Forces and the United Nations from Canadian Forces Station Alert in Nunavit to war-torn countries like Bosnia. He assisted in the restructuring and rebuilding in Montserrat from the devastation after Hurricane Hugo tore through that country. He also deployed on two six-month tours in the Middle East with the United Nations, as well as shorter tours around the world and Canada. Al’s last posting was Winnipeg, where he served from 1982 until his retirement in 1996 after 33 years of service.
One of Al’s great loves was his 59 years with Scouts Canada that spanned from starting a local Cub Pack to serving in positions at the provincial level. He started the Cub Pack in CFB Chilliwack in the early 1970s and organized a Jamboree at Cultus Lake that started out with about 20 cubs, and ended with over 500 Cub Scouts from the Fraser Valley/Lower Mainland area. He received many commendations and awards for his numerous achievements with Scouts Canada over the years.
Al was very active in his communities. He was a long-time member of the Royal Canadian Legion and, along with his wife Gayleen, he was a recipient of the Manitoba’s Lieutenant Governor’s “Make a Difference Community Award” in 2005. Al was a member of the Odd Fellows Fraternal Organization for over 25 years and served a term as Grand Master of Manitoba.
Achievements through his years in the Stonewall/Rockwood area were many and varied. He was a Neighbourhood Watch Co-Captain for some 20 years for the Oakwood Estates community. He served with the Stonewall Christmas Cheer Board from its inception for over 25 years. He was a life member of Blood Services and donated for over 50 years. He trained in logistics on the Canadian Red Cross Disaster Response Team from 2001 to 2009. He was a Medical Equipment Loans Service technician for the Stonewall Depot for several years. Al worked on the construction of The Youth for Christ Drop-in and served on the Building Maintenance Committee for the Stonewall United Church.
A Celebration of Life was held on 6 December 2025 at the Stonewall United Church { 369 First Ave N, Stonewall}, with a lunch that followed at the Odd Fellows Hall {374 First Street W, Stonewall}. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home.
