Thomas James Adamson

We regret to advise of the death of Thomas James Adamson peacefully on 11 July 2011 at the Kipnes Center for Veterans in Edmonton at the age of 87 years. Tom served in World War II with the Royal Canadian Engineers. After his military service Tom had a career spanning 37 years with the Alberta Attorney Generals Department, retiring as a Director of Court Services in 1981.

Funeral Services will be held on 16 July 2011 at Crestwood Presbyterian Church in Edmonton. Interment to follow at Westlawn Memorial Gardens, Edmonton.

Elmer Jeremiah Hicks

We regret to advise that Elmer Hicks passed away peacefully in Moncton on 4 July 2011 at the age of 92.

Born in Valcartier Village, QC. Elmer attended Valcartier School and the Commissioners High School in Quebec City. In 1941, he enlisted in the Canadian Army and then served with the Royal Canadian Engineers for 30 years. His postings included Victoria, Fredericton and Oromocto.

After retiring from the military, Elmer worked for the Oromocto Development Corporation as manager of properties and then worked for ten years at the University of New Brunswick. Elmer was a very active member of his community and among Retired Sappers.

A service to celebrate Elmer's life will be held on 8 July at 2:00 pm at the St. John's Anglican Church 70 Broad Road in Oromocto. Visitation will be July 7 from 6:30-8:30 at the Oromocto Funeral Home in Oromocto. Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 93 will hold a tribute service Thursday at 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Donations in memory of Elmer may be made to the Alzheimer's Society or a charity of your choice.

Gordon T Brown

We regret to advise of the death of Gordon T Brown of Vancouver on 1 July 2011 at the age of 93 years. Gordon was born in Vancouver and was a veteran of the Second World War and served overseas in the Royal Canadian Engineers.

A memorial service was held on 6 July 2011 at Fairview Presbyterian Church in Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to World Vision Canada or Ratanak International. {dcDec19wd} [zsd, zcc, zpp]

LCol John Francis Feller, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant-Colonel John Francis Feller, CD (Ret'd) on 24 June 2011 away after a lengthy illness.

John was born in the Netherlands in 1952 and immigrated to Canada with his family before his second birthday. He grew up in Lethbridge, AB. and started an interest in the military in his youth with the Navy League Cadets. He enrolled in the Canadian Forces in 1970 and attended Royal Roads Military College in Victoria BC and The Royal Military College in Kingston ON graduating in 1974 with a degree in Civil Engineering.

John's military career included postings with 1 Combat Engineer Regiment and various bases in Canada. He was seconded to the British Army in 1980 and served in the United Kingdom (including a stint as an instructor at the Royal School of Military Engineering), Germany, Denmark and Austria. On his return to Canada in 1984, John was posted to the National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa. Among his responsibilities, he developed a Canadian Airfield Damage Repair capability in Europe. During this period, he also trained at the United States Navy Explosive Ordinance Disposal School and participated in exercises in the United States, Germany and Norway. 

John retired from the Regular Force in 1991. From 1991 to 2004, John held the position of Director of Facilities Services for Cariboo College [now Thompson Rivers University]. He joined the Rocky Mountain Rangers in 1992 and served as the Deputy Commanding Officer and then as Commanding Officer from 1994 to 1999. Following his appointment as Commanding Officer, John served with the 39 Canadian Brigade Group Headquarters in Vancouver as well as the Land Force Western Area Headquarters in Edmonton. He returned to full-time service as an army Reservist in 2004 serving as Transitional Planning Officer and as liaison to Joint Task Force Pacific. In 2007 John was appointed Commander Task Force Freetown in the Republic of Sierra Leone, Africa. Upon returning to Canada, he was involved in the support of the 2010 Olympic Games. Following this duty, he again took command of The Rocky Mountain Rangers for a second time in 2009 until his passing.

A military funeral for LCol Feller is planned for Sunday 3 July when he will be interred with full military honours. Funeral services will take place at 3:00 p.m., St. Paul's Cathedral, 360 Nicola St, Kamloops, BC. Procession from the church will immediately follow. Afterwards, there will be a Reception starting at 5:00 pm at the Rocky Mountain Rangers Armoury, located at 1221 McGill Road for anyone wishing to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory to the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation, 311 Columbia Street, Kamloops BC V2C 2T1, www.rihfoundation.ca will be gratefully appreciated.

Sgt John MacAulay (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant John MacAulay (Retd) in Edmonton on 22 June 2011 at the age of 82 years after a lengthy battle.

Formerly of Glace Bay, NS, John had served 25 years with the Canadian Forces and was a veteran of the Korean War.

A Celebration of John's Life will be held on Tuesday, 28 June at 2:00 PM at the Evergreen Funeral Chapel, 16204 Fort Road, Edmonton, with viewing taking place one hour prior. Interment to follow in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Donations in memory of John may be made to the Canadian Lung Association, Alberta Cancer Foundation or to charity of one's choice.

Lt Stirling Alfred Baudoux (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant Stirling Alfred Baudoux (Ret’d) on 20 June 2011 at the Kingston General Hospital in Kingston ON at the age of 94 years.

Stirling was born in Stellerton NS.  He was a veteran of the Second World and served with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  He took part in the landings in Sicily and served in Italy before being sent to the 2nd Field Company in Normandy. He landed in Normandy on 5 July 1944 as their Reconnaissance Officer.  As such, he was travelling with the 14th Hussars (8th Canadian Reconnaissance Regiment) and was among the first Canadians to enter Dieppe on 1 September 1944.  He and his driver had been tasked to gauge the state of the beaches and, being unopposed except for the jubilant crowds, he found the city undefended. The Hussars were thus able to call off the planned aerial bombardment of the city.  Stirling stayed with the company until the war ended with the Liberation of Holland. Stirling continued to serve through the Battle of the Scheldt and Liberation of Holland.

After the war, Stirling moved to Kingston. He served in the Militia and was the Commanding Officer of 55th Field Squadron at the time it was made dormant in 1965. Stirling was a longstanding member of Keith Masonic Lodge in Stellarton.  He was recognized by the Boy Scouts of Canada National Council with the Medal of Merit for especially good service to Scouting.  He served on the Board of Managers at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and was a loyal member of the Saint Andrew's War Veterans Association.

Friends will be received at the Robert J. Reid & Sons Funeral Home on 23 June from 3:00 to 5:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM.  The Funeral Service will be held in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church on 24 June at 2:00 PM. Interment at a later date in Brookside Cemetery, New Glasgow, NS.  In memory of Stirling, donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated.  [dcSep19gd} [zcc]

Spr John Francis O’Keefe (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper John Francis O’Keefe (Ret’d) in the Glace Bay Hospital, Glace Bay, NS on 15 June 2011 at the age of 87 years.

John was born in Glace Bay.  He started working for the Sydney & Louisbourg Railway Company in 1943, but left his job to serve his country during the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  When the war ended, John returned to his old job, retiring in 1986 from the Sydney & Louisbourg and Devco Railway Company.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #3, Glace Bay and also a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

A funeral mass will be held on 20 June at 11:00 AM in St. Anthony’s Church, 23 Dominion St, Glace Bay followed by interment in the parish cemetery. The Legion will provide a guard of honour for their departed comrade at the entrance to the church.  Donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Diabetic Association or Palliative Care, Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation. {dcApr17gd} [zsd, zpp]

Paul S.K. Leung

We regret to advise of the passing of Paul S.K. Leung, on 11 June 2011.

Born in Hong Kong in 1929, Paul emigrated to Winnipeg, MB in 1952. He attained a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Manitoba in three years and later acquired a M.Eng. from the University of Wisconsin. After working for a number of independent firms in Syracuse, Montreal and Ottawa he joined the Chief of Construction and Properties group at National Defence Headquarters. Paul retired as the Director of Construction Engineering in 1994.

According to his wishes, Paul will be cremated. Friends and relatives are invited to attend an informal gathering in honour of his memory at the Beechwood Visitation Centre 280 Beechwood Ave. Ottawa on Sunday, 19 June between 2:00 and 4:00pm.

Col John Gordon Forth CD, P.Eng., BASc, BEng, (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Colonel John Gordon Forth CD, P.Eng., BASc, BEng, (Retd) on 9 June 2011 in Ottawa after a short battle with cancer.

Col Forth enrolled in Royal Canadian Air Force Reserve in 1948 under the University Reserve Training Plan and started his university training at Joint Services Colleges in Kingston. The next Fall he transferred to the Canadian Army Reserve and continued his university education. Under the Canadian Officers Training Corps program. In 1952 he transferred to the Canadian Army Regular with the Royal Canadian Engineers, graduated from Royal Military College that year and underwent Officer training. Upon completion of his officer training he joined 23 Field Squadron in Korea, as Reconnaissance Officer and Troop Officer.

Returning to Canada in 1953, he attended the University of Toronto to complete a Bachelor of Chemistry degree and in 1954 he was posted to The Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering as Troop Commander in Apprentice Training Squadron. After a short tour, Captain Forth moved on to 1 Airborne Troop RCE in Calgary in 1955 as Second in Command and was later appointed Officer Commanding (1956 - 58).

After a tour as Second in Command of 24 Works Company at Camp Borden, he attended the Canadian Army Staff College in Kingston. From there was posted to the Office of Chief of Engineering at Army Headquarters. On completion of this assignment, Major Forth was appointed Commanding Officer 1 Field Squadron (1962 - 64) and then remained in Petawawa for another year with the Army Tactics and Organization Board.

Completing the Petawawa tour, in 1965, LCol Forth proceeded to Headquarters, Mobile Command, St-Hubert, QC, as Senior Staff Officer, Field Engineering and in 1968 as Acting Command Engineer. The next year Col Forth proceeded to Canadian Forces Headquarters as Director Construction Engineering Requirements and, in 1970, became Director Military Engineering. After some language training in Quebec City, he returned to Headquarters, Mobile Command as Deputy Chief of Staff, Requirements. and was subsequently appointed Commandant, Ecole des Langues des Forces canadiennes, CFB St-Jean, QC (1972 -75). Col Forth returned to language training in 1975 as a student at Canadian Forces Foreign Language School on Japanese language training. He subsequently held appointments as Canadian Forces Attaché to Seoul, South Korea (1976-1978) and Tokyo, Japan (1976-1980). After these two tours, he returned to Ottawa as Deputy Director General Properties and Utilities (1980 - 82). 

Retiring from the Canadian Forces in 1982, Col Forth initially worked for about a year with the Petroleum Monitoring Agency of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources before moving to Carleton University where he spent 16 years as Assistant Dean of Engineering. Following retirement he served in various voluntary positions.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, 439 Queen Street, Ottawa ON, at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 15, followed by a reception in Cathedral Hall. Internment in the Christ Church Cathedral Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, donations to Harvest House, Christ Church Cathedral Foundation, or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Gerald “Gerry” M. Howe

We regret to advise of the death of Gerald “Gerry” M. Howe at the Pembroke Regional Hospital on 8 June 2011 at the age of 87.

Gerry was a WW II veteran who served in England and France with 30th Light Anti-Aircraft Battery, Royal Canadian Artillery (Conn Smythe’s "Sportsman’s Battery") before transferring to the 2nd Field Survey Company, Royal Canadian Engineers for the remainder of the war in Northwest Europe.

After the war Gerry spent over 40 years in the Life Insurance business, 22 years in management. He was past President of Ottawa Chapter of the Chartered Life Underwriters, past Vice-President Ottawa Life Underwriters Association and past Director of the Montreal Life Underwriters Association. For many years he taught Chartered Life Underwriters courses. He also served as President and Director of The United Way of the Upper Ottawa Valley. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #72 in Pembroke.

Visitation will take place at the Murphy Funeral Home, 296 Isabella Street Pembroke on 13 and 14 June. Members of Royal Canadian Legion Branch #72 will meet at the Funeral Home at 7:30 p.m on 13 June. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on 14 June in St. Columbkilles Cathedral, Pembroke. Sgt Kelly Smith, CD

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Kelly Smith, CD, a firefighter with 19 Wing Comox, who died at home on Sunday 5 Jun 2011 at 50 years.

Sgt Smith had served the early part of his 25-year Canadian Forces career as an Infantryman with the Royal Canadian Regiment before transferring to the Canadian Military Engineers and becoming a Firefighter. His career included postings to many locations including Petawawa, Baden, Winnipeg, Comox as well deployments to Cyprus (1964 and 1986) and Afghanistan (2005 and 2007).

The funeral of Sgt Kelly Smith will take place on Saturday, 11 June at 1000 hrs at the Protestant Chapel Lazo, BC. The Chapel is located beside the arena on Military Row just outside 19 Wing Comox.

H. Dalton Flatt

We regret to advise of the death of H. Dalton Flatt at Southlake Regional Hospital, Newmarket, ON on 26 May 2011 in his 95th year.

Dalton was a WW II veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  He was a retired employee of the Regional Municipality of York, ON. 

Visitation at the Egan Funeral Home, 203 Queen Street S. (Hwy. 50), Bolton, ON on 29 May from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral service will be held in the chapel on 30 May at 1:30 PM.  Interment at King City Cemetery, 2580 King Rd, King City, ON.  Donations may be made to the charity of your choice. {gdOct2016kh}

Spr Howard Spencer Sutton (Ret'd)

We regret to advise the death of Sapper Howard Spencer Sutton (Ret'd) on 18 May 2011 in Calgary, AB.

Howard was born in Owen Sound, ON in 1922. In 1942 he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers and fought during WW II. Demobilized after the war, he later rejoined with the Special Service Force and fought in Korea. In 1952 he left the military and joined the Canadian Pacific Railway where he worked for 38 years. This was followed by ten years as Regional General Chairman of the Canadian Pacific and Canadian National union representing 2800 men.

A Memorial Service will be held on 27 May 27at the McDougall United Church, 8516 Athabasca Street S.E., Calgary. If desired, donations may be made to Calgary Veterans Poppy Fund, Lung Association or Canadian Wildlife Federation. Condolences may be forwarded by visiting www.leydens.com . {gdJan2016kh}

S/Sgt John William "Johnny" Frouws (Ret'd)

We regret to advise the death of Staff Sergeant John William "Johnny" Frouws (Ret'd), suddenly in his greenhouse on 18 May 2011 in Lethbridge AB.

John was born in Groningen, Netherlands and emigrated as an infant with his family. He grew up in Southern Alberta. As a teenager, he worked for the City of Lethbridge Parks Department. John was a veteran of the Second World War who served in the Royal Canadian Engineers.

After the war, John resumed working for the City in 1947 as a streetcar and bus driver. In 1962, he was promoted to Transit Superintendent. John completed 38 years of service to the City when he retired in 1976.

John and his wife were avid gardeners and won Canada's Best Veterans' Vegetable and Flower Garden Trophy five years in a row. They also volunteered as Sunday school teachers at Southminster United Church for several years.

A Funeral Service was held at the Cornerstone Funeral Home in Lethbridge on Friday 27 May 2011. Interment to follow in Mountain View Cemetery. In memory of John, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or a charity of your choice.

 

Major Peter Sandham, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death Major Peter Sandham (Ret'd) on 15 May 2011 in Victoria, BC after a brief illness.

Born in 1922, Peter was educated in St. Catharine's, ON and went on to the University of Toronto to become a civil engineer. Peter enlisted in the RCAF during WW II and trained as a pilot with his first solo flight being in November 1943. He was released from active service in January 1945 and returned to university to finish his degree - becoming a Professional Engineer in October 1948. Peter was the first military Base Construction Engineering Officer at CFB Esquimalt (1966 to 1971).

He retired from the military in 1971 and was an active member of the CMEA Victoria Chapter. A service will be held at the First Memorial Funeral Chapel, 4725 Falaise Dr., on 14 June at 2:00 pm.

Alexander Wilfred "Pat" Thorne

We regret to advise of the death of Alexander Wilfred "Pat" Thorne at his residence in Southampton, ON, on 11 May 2011 in his 85th year.

Formerly of Sydney, NS, Pat was a WW II Veteran who enlisted in the Royal Canadian Engineers of the Permanent Force after the war. He was a distinguished hobby boat builder, painter, carver, collector and a quiet supporter of those less privileged. 

Southampton Legion Branch #155 will host a Memorial Service at the Eagleson Funeral Home on 15 May. A Funeral Service to Celebrate the Life of Pat Thorne will be conducted at the Salvation Army Temple, Owen Sound, on 16 May 2011 with a Time of Fellowship and Sharing following the Service. Interment at Southampton Cemetery. Expressions of Remembrance to the Salvation Army, Owen Sound may be made through the Funeral Home.{khApr2018}[zsc,zcc]

John Draper

We regret to advise of the death of John Draper on 3 May 2011 from Coldwater, ON at the age of 84 years.

John was a Second World War veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #270 in Coldwater.

William David Buxton Sr., CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of William David Buxton Sr., CD (Ret'd) in Bangor, Maine, on 29 April 2011 at age 68 after a short battle with cancer.

Born in England during World War II to a war bride and a Canadian serviceman, he arrived in Canada with the family at the age of two to live in British Columbia. His father, Bill Buxton, had served in the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in Sicily and Italy and came home to Canada to join the Royal Canadian Engineers.  Growing up in Chilliwack, BC, William later moved to New Brunswick as a teen where his father was involved in the building of Camp Gagetown in the 1950s. After schooling, he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers and he later transferred to the Royal Canadian Dental Corps. William's military years saw him living in various places in Canada and Europe.

William he took his release from the Dental Corps in 1972 to start his civilian career as a denturist. In his civilian life, William was involved in the denturist movement in Canada, holding many positions provincially, nationally, and internationally, while owning denture clinics in New Brunswick at Fredericton, Woodstock, Minto, Sussex, Petitcodiac and Havelock. In 1998 he moved to Maine to help establish New England Denture Centers with their son. The Buxton family has three generations of denturists that graduated from George Brown College, Toronto. Bill was a former councillor with the town of Sussex, NB.

Services will be announced at a later date to be held at Pushaw Lake with interment to be in Fredericton, NB. Those wishing to remember Bill in a special way may make gifts in his memory to any local animal shelter.  {kh9Sep2015}[zri]

Leonard Douglas Russell

We regret to advise of the death of Leonard Douglas Russell peacefully on 29 April 2011 at home in Windsor, ON at the age of 85 years . 

Leonard was a veteran of the Second World War who served with Royal Canadian Engineers.  After the war he worked for Route Canada (formerly Husband Transport) as a dispatcher. He was a member of Oakwood Bible Chapel.

Visitation will be at the Windsor Chapel Funeral Home, Main Chapel, 1700 Tecumseh Road East on 3 May from 2-5 and 7-9 PM. Funeral services will be held on 4 May at 10:30 AM in the Chapel. Interment to follow at Victoria Memorial Gardens, Windsor.  Donations may be made to the Guelph Conference Grounds or Gideon Memorial Bible Fund.  {gdApr2017dc} [zsd, zcc]

S/Sgt William Denzel Yorke (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Staff Sergeant William Denzel Yorke on 25 April 2011 in Tideview Terrace, Digby NS. Born in Bear River, NS, Denzel served in the Royal Canadian Engineers during World War II. He completed his war service in 1945 as a Staff Sergeant. After the war Denzel operated a taxi service, worked for NS Power and was a fire fighter for 26 years in Cornwallis as well as a volunteer fire fighter in Bear River. He was a Legion member for over 50 years.

Along with a Legion service, Denzel’s funeral was held at the Hillsburg United Church, Bear River. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson Society of Nova Scotia, Canadian Cancer Society, or charity of choice.

Cpl Antonio Girimonte

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Antonio Girimonte, 24, a Combat Engineer with 5e Régiment du Génie de Combat, Valcartier, who died on 19 April 2011 after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Corporal Girimonte was born in East York, ON in 1986. He enrolled in the Canadian Forces as a Combat Engineer in April 2006 and, after completion of his Basic Engineer Training at Chilliwack, BC, was posted to Régiment du Génie de Combat, where he served his career.

Public visitation will be on Tuesday 26 April from 17h00 to 20h00 and Wednesday 27 April from 10h00 to 13h00 with Funeral Service to follow at 1300hrs at Glendale Visitation Centre, 1810 Albion Road, Etobicoke, ON (416-679-1803).

Maj Don Edgecombe CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Major Ralph Donald (Don) Edgecombe (Retd) on 18 Apr 2011.

Don served with the ADM (IE) Group until September 2009 after a Military Engineer career. At Don's request there will not be a funeral service.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, 30 April, at 11:00 a.m., at the Hulse, Playfair and McGarry Funeral Home, 315 McLeod Street, (at O'Connor), Ottawa. There will be a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Cpl Archie McLellan, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Archie McLellan (Ret'd) at the Cascade Hospice in Chilliwack, BC on 12 April 2011.

Archie was a farm kid who was born in Wolseley, SK in 1926. He joined the navy during WWII at the age of 16 and served his country for three years. In 1948, Archie joined the Royal Canadian Engineers and was posted to Chilliwack. His career included two tours with the UN in Egypt and one tour in Germany. After his discharge from the military, he worked in construction with Kel-Mor and Chilliwack Sand and Gravel. He was a 51-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 4.

A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, 23 April 2011 at 11:00 a.m. At St. John's Anglican Church, 46078 Higginson Road, Chilliwack. No flowers by request. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Chilliwack Hospice would be appreciated.

LCol James Irving "Bing" Thompson, MiD, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant Colonel James Irving (Bing) Thompson, MiD, CD (Ret'd) on 10 April 2011 in Ottawa at age 92 years.

Lt-Col Thompson was a veteran of the Second World War serving in the Royal Canadian Engineers. He played a great part in the historic development of modern mapping science. His careers included first as a Hydrographer, then as a Military Surveyor and pioneer Arctic Mapper. He also obtained prominence as a leader in developing Canada's Foreign Aid mapping program.

Bing was born in Lynden, ON and graduated from the University of Toronto in 1939. He then began a short-lived career with the Canadian Hydrographic Service that came to an end in May 1941 when he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers. He trained for a year in surveying and photogrammetry at the Geographical Section of the General Staff at Rockcliffe before embarking overseas in May,1942. He saw service with the Canadian (Air) Survey Company, a unit that using photogrammetry, acquired map information ahead of the Allied front lines. He was Mentioned in Dispatches after the Rhine Crossing for his role in the rapid mapping of enemy territory.

Capt Thompson returned to Canada in 1945 and entered the Directorate of Operational Research at the Department of National Defence in Ottawa. His team adopted the WWII SHORAN (Short Range Aid to Navigation) radar system for use in the accurate mapping of Northern Canada for the first time. In 1947, Maj Thompson was posted to the newly created Army Survey Establishment (ASE) in 1947 where he was responsible for developing photogrammetric techniques for employing SHORAN in northern surveys. In January 1947 he led the first Army Survey winter survey party into the North, along the coast of Hudson Bay, to map the new Fort Churchill Arctic Training area. Living and working in severe weather conditions they completed this work in two winter seasons.

In 1953, he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel and became Commanding Officer of Army Survey Establishment until 1959 after which he went on to head the External Aid Mapping Programme of the Federal Surveys & Mapping Branch.

Lt Ralph Carleton Hargrave (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant Ralph Carleton Hargrave (Ret’d) in Calgary, AB on 3 April 2011 at the age of 90.

Ralph was born and raised in Redcliff, AB. He received his education in Redcliff and in Medicine Hat, AB.  He graduated from the University of Alberta in 1943 with a degree in Civil Engineering. Immediately following his graduation, he joined the Army where he attained the rank of Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Engineers serving during WWII. Following the war, Ralph established his Civil Engineering career in the construction industry working on many projects across Canada and around the world.  He retired in 1986.

Memorial Services will be held at Scarboro United Church; 134 Scarboro Avenue S.W., Calgary on 10 May at 2:00 p.m.  Donations may be made to Scarboro United Church Building Fund, 124 Scarboro Avenue S.W., Calgary. Ivan Drake

We regret to advise of the death of Ivan Drake peacefully at the Perley Rideau Veterans Health Care Centre, Ottawa, ON on 28 March 2011 in his 91st year.

Ivan was a veteran of the Second World War serving in the Royal Canadian Engineers.

MCpl Alan Rodney Turner, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Master Corporal Alan Rodney Turner, CD (Ret'd) on 22 March 2011 quietly at home in Belleville ON in his 90th year.  Alan was a veteran of World War II who served as an Able Seaman in the Canadian Navy aboard HMCS Nene on the Murmansk Run and served a post-war career with the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Alan was born in Vancouver BC and lived in Edmonton AB and Toronto ON before he joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1940. He served aboard HMCS Nene on the Murmansk Run and was discharged in 1945 at Victoria BC. Al subsequently joined the Weather Ship Service in 1946 where he served on board the CGS Stonetown for one year. Al then joined the Oak Bay Fire Department in 1947 for three years and then joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as a firefighter. He was stationed at Clinton ON, Claresholm AB and Winnipeg MB, where he remustered to Mobile Support Equipment Operator with Base Transportation. He then served at Goose Bay NFL and, finally, Trenton ON where he retired in 1972 at the age of 50. During his postings at Goose Bay and Trenton he acted as minor sports convenor.

Following his retirement in 1972 Al obtained a position with General Bakeries at their depot in Belleville ON and retired as manager at age 65. Al was a long-time member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Army and Navy Veterans. In 1985 Al and his wife Marg were instrumental in organizing the first reunion of  HMCS Nene’s crewmembers. {khApr2020}

George Donald “Don” Morison Kettyls, B.Sc., MD., FRCP

We regret to advise of the death of George Donald “Don” Morison Kettyls, B.Sc., MD., FRCP in Vancouver, BC on 21 March 2011.

Don was born in Edmonton, AB.  He was a WW II veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  Upon demobilization, he entered the University of Alberta to study Medicine.  Following graduation, he spent two years as a general practitioner of medicine in British Columbia.  His interest in infectious diseases was advanced when he accepted a position to establish and direct a diagnostic laboratory for the provincial government to isolate and identify viruses causing disease and to implement preventative methods to control of such diseases. In his distinguished career in public health, Don left a significant legacy by helping to establish a number of community health facilities throughout the province of BC, including the Williams Lake Health Centre.  

Don was also an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia teaching medical students, residents, laboratory scientists and nurses. As the principal author or contributor, Don was involved in the publication of several scientific papers, which are still referenced in textbooks used in medical schools today.

A memorial service will be held 30 April 30 at 2:00 p.m. at First Memorial, Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Rd., North Vancouver, BC.  Donations may be made to Meals on Wheels North Shore.  {gdNov2016kh}

John James "Jack" Kilby

We regret to advise of the death of John James "Jack" Kilby suddenly on 18 March 2011 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria at age 72.

Lt George A. Wallace (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant George A. Wallace (Ret’d) of Cobden ON on 16 March 2011 at the age of 95 years.

George was a Royal Canadian Engineers veteran of the Second World War. Joining as a sapper, he completed his service in as a lieutenant. George was a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Cobden Branch.

Spr Orval Rhude (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Orval Warren Rhude of Colborne ON at the age of 88 years on 9 March 2011 at Bluewater Health Hospital in Sarnia ON.

Orval was born in Timmins ON. He was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Second World War serving in the 1st Field Survey Company in Northwest Europe. After the war, he came to Sarnia and worked at Polysar (Polymer Corporation) from 1948 to 1983. He was a member of the Sarnia Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Cremation has taken place. Family and friends will be received on 14 March from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the Smith Funeral Home in Sarnia followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM. A private interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. Instead of flowers, sympathy may be expressed through donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or St. Joseph's. Donald Floyd McMillan

We regret to advise of the death of Donald Floyd McMillan at the London ON University Hospital on 7 March 2011, just shy of his 85th birthday. 

Don was born in Englehart ON and was a veteran of the Second World War who served in the Royal Canadian Engineers.  He grew up in the northern Ontario mining region and in 1950 moved to Sudbury where he worked for the Falconridge mining company for many years.  After retirement, he relocated to London to be closer to his children and their families.

A memorial visitation will be held from 3:00 until 5:00 PM on 10 March at the Jackson & Barnard Funeral Home in Sudbury followed by burial in the Sudbury Civic Memorial Cemetery. Donations to the  Royal Canadian Legion Branch 336, Falconbridge ON in Donald’s will be appreciated.

Joseph Lucien Guy Pierre “Pete” Morin

We regret to advise of the death of Joseph Lucien Guy Pierre “Pete” Morin peacefully on 5 March 2011 at the age of 75 years.

Pete was born in Aylmer, QC and received his early education at Bréboeuf School in Hull, QC and his high school education at Lasalle Academy in Ottawa, ON.  This was followed by courses in printing at Ottawa Technical High School.  In 1956 he joined the Army Survey Establishment (ASE) in Ottawa as a Student Draftsman and qualified as Draftsman Grade 1 in 1958.  During the years that followed, through courses and experience, he achieved the level of DD4 in 1967.  Pete had a 35-year career with ASE where he worked on a wide variety of map products but much of his career was involved with the Joint Operations Graphic (JOC) series of maps. In 2002 he retired to his cottage on Heney Lake, QC.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Notre Dame de Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, 435 Montreal Road, Ottawa on 9 March at 10:30 AM. Donations may be made to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.  {gdMar2017dc}

John Baptiste Ontoine Bataller

We regret to advise of the death of John Baptiste Ontoine Bataller on 24 February 2011 in Victoria, BC, at the age of 84 years. John was born in Cape Breton, NS, and initially joined the Canadian Army in 1944 as an Infantryman Signaller and later transferred to the Royal Canadian Engineers. John then spent most of his Engineer career as a Heavy Equipment Operator at Chilliwack and retired from the Armed Forces in 1975.
A remembrance ceremony will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Cemetery, 10010 Hillcrest, Chilliwack, on 12 March 2011 at 1:00 pm followed by a fellowship gathering at the Royal Canadian Legion, 9350 Mary Street, Chilliwack. Daniel Clifford “Danny” Sampson

We regret to advise of the death of Daniel “Danny” Clifford Sampson of River Bourgeois, NS at St. Martha's Regional Hospital in Antigonish, NS on 17 February 2011 at the age of 82 years.

Danny was born in Little Dover, NS.  He joined the Canadian Army in the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1951 and served in the Korean War. He was honourably released from the Canadian Forces in 1954.   Danny was a member of the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping and was a member of the Private Alexander Lerue Chapter in Port Hawkesbury, NS.  He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #150 in Arichat, NS.

A Memorial Mass will take place in St. John the Baptist Church, River Bourgeois on 21 February at 11:00 AM.  Burial will take place in the church cemetery.  Donations can be made to the Veteran's Comfort Fund. 

Cpl Frederick “Fred” Rodger Archer (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Frederick “Fred” Rodger Archer (Ret’d) peacefully in his sleep on 16 February 2011 at Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston, ON in his 94th year.

Fred was a WW II veteran who served in the Royal Canadian Engineers.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #171 Alliston.

Visitation will be held at the W. Sgt Lloyd Clive Scrimshaw (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the sudden death Sergeant Lloyd Clive Scrimshaw (Retd) at the Prince George Hospital on 15 February 2011 in his 69th year. Formerly of Orillia, ON, Lloyd served his country at home and abroad with the Royal Canadian Engineers. Cremation has taken place. Major Joseph “Joe” James Bray, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Major Joseph “Joe” James Bray CD (Ret’d) peacefully on 10 February 2011 at the Perley Rideau Veterans Centre, Ottawa, ON at the age of 83.

Joe was born in Regina, SK. He was a graduate of McGill University (BA) and Carleton University (MA), and Canadian Army Staff College. He was a Korean War veteran. He served with pride in both the Regular and Reserve Army with the Royal Canadian Engineers, The Royal Canadian Regiment, and the Regiment of Canadian Guards, in Canada, Korea, England, Gaza, Syria and Jordan. After leaving the army, Joe was employed in the Office of State Visits, Treasury Board Secretariat, Transport Canada and other organizations within the Public Service.

There is a private interment at Beechwood National Military Cemetery. Donations to the Perley Rideau Foundation would be much appreciated. {gdJuly 2015}

MWO Arthur S. Lamperd, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Master Warrant Officer Arthur S. Lamperd, CD (Ret’d) in Summerside PE on 10 February 2011 at the age of 78.

Arthur was born in Chatham ON and served in both the Royal Canadian Navy and Royal Canadian Air Force as a Fire Fighter.  His final posting was at Canadian Forces Base Summerside where he was the Fire Chief.  He was a member of the Summerside Lions Club.

Cpl James McAlpine, CD (Ret'd)

Nous regrettons d’annoncer le décès du caporal James McAlpine, CD, (retraité), un technicien en géomatique à l'Établissement de cartographie à Ottawa, décédé le 8 février 2011 à l'âge de 32 ans alors qu'il participait à un tournoi régional de hockey à Valcartier, QC.

James McAlpine est né à Oromocto NB et s'est enrôlé à Ottawa en septembre 1998. Il a choisi l'infanterie comme première carrière et a terminé sa formation de base à St-Jean avant d'être envoyé à la BFC Valcartier pour son entraînement à l'École de combat.  Il a ensuite rejoint le 2e Bataillon du Royal 22e Régiment.  Ses déploiements incluent la Bosnie-Herzégovine dans le cadre de la Roto 10, l'Op PALLADIUM en 2002 et l'Afghanistan dans le cadre de l'Op ARCHER en 2006-2007. James a été promu sergent en décembre 2007. La géographie et les sciences appliquées l’ont toujours beaucoup intéressé et l'ont amené à changer de métier pour devenir un technicien en géomatique et à joindre l'Établissement de cartographie et de cartographie.

Les visites auront lieu à la Maison funéraire Kelly, 585 rue Somerset Ouest, Ottawa, le 18 février de 14h00 à 17h00 et de 19h00 à 21h00 et le matin du19 février de 08h00 à 10h00. Spr Alexander Grant Ross (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Alexander Grant Ross (Ret’d) of Avondale, NS at the Shiretown Nursing Home, Pictou, NS on 4 February 2011 at the age of 88 years.

Alexander was a veteran of the Second World War and served in Northwest Europe with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  After the war, he made a living farming, logging, trucking and Christmas tree exporting.

There will visitation for the family from 11:00 until 12:00 noon on 6 February in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow, NS. A private family service will follow in Hattie Cemetery, Avondale with Alexander’s granddaughter, Lieutenant Commander Bonnie Mason officiating. Donations may be made in Grant’s memory to Hattie Cemetery or any charity of choice.

Maj Errington “Ric” McMahon, (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Major Errington “Ric” McMahon, (Ret’d) of Brockville ON in his 96th year on 2 March 2011.
 
Ric was born and raised in Toronto ON. He attended Pickering College and studied mining engineering at Queen’s University in Kingston ON.  He was a veteran of the Second World War and served in the Royal Canadian Engineers in Northwest Europe reaching the rank of major.  He enjoyed a decades-long attachment to and concern for his fellow veteran Sappers of Queens University 5th Field Company of the Royal Canadian Engineers in Kingston. Ric was also a long time supporter of Pickering College in Newmarket, ON

Friends will be received at the Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel, 4 James Street East, Brockville, on 6 March after 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM when services will be held in the Chapel. Interment will take place in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto. Remembrance donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. 

Capt Arthur Dewolf Smith, CD (Ret’d)

Clyde Anthony

We regret to advise of the death of Clyde Ashley Anthony peacefully at the Dykeland Lodge Residence for Seniors in Windsor NS on 30 January 2011 at the age of 90. 

Clyde was born in Charleston, Queens County NS.   He served in the Royal Canadian Navy as well as in the Army Reserves with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps and Royal Canadian Engineers.  After leaving the Navy, he worked for many years at the Halifax Shipyards as a supervisor. 

A funeral service will be held on 6 February in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home Chapel, 194 King Street, Windsor followed by a reception in the Lindsay Family Reception Centre, 184 King Street. John Mead "Jack" Buchanan

We regret to advise of the death of John Mead "Jack" Buchanan, peacefully, on 29 January 2011 in the Cowichan District Hospital. John was born in Trail, BC in 1916, attended St. Michael's School in Victoria, BC and then The University of Washington where he graduated with a degree in metallurgical engineering in 1941. Jack then commenced his career with Cominco in Trail before enlisting with the Royal Canadian Engineers in September 1941.

Following the war Jack returned to Trail where he became superintendent of the zinc plant. He went on to become manager of metal production and finally assistant manager of Trail operations. From 1964 to 1967 Jack worked in India where he was responsible for establishing a zinc smelter for Cominco Binani Zinc Company. Jack was active in community affairs in Trail: he was a member of the Trail Library Board and was president of the Rotary Club and The United Way and also served as Civil Defense Coordinator for Trail and District and was a member of the Tadanac Municipal Council. Jack retired from Cominco in 1981 after forty years of service. In 1990 he moved to Duncan, BC.

Cpl Robert John “Bob” Cunningham (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Robert John “Bob” Cunningham (Ret’d) at Camp Hill Hospital in Halifax, NS on 28 January 2011 at the age of 91 years.

Robert was born in London, England and immigrated with his parents to Melbourne, QC where he grew up and finished high school. He volunteered for the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1939 and initially worked as a surveyor for artillery ranging in England and later with No. 1 Canadian Tunnelling Company in Gibraltar. He designed the Gibraltar Key, an unofficial award presented to those involved in the project. He later worked at the Artillery School in England. In 1944 he was commissioned into the Infantry and served in the Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders, seeing action in Belgium and Holland in 1944 and 1945.

After the war, Bob had a varied career working as a prospector, miner, tunnel worker, surveyor, wood carver, artist, published author and poet. These latter two activities both started after his 65th birthday.  He wrote five books on Maritime history and a book of poetry about his life at Camp Hill Hospital.

Bob was a co-founder of the Dartmouth Boys Pipes & Drums. He was a Free Mason, a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the 1st Battalion Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders Veterans’ Association.   Although Bob lived his later years in the Maritimes and had never lived in Northern Ontario, his obituary was also published in the Timmons Daily Press as a tribute to his service with No. 1 Tunnelling Company who were largely recruited from that region.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at White Family Funeral Home on 19 February at 1 p.m. followed by a reception. A private family interment will take place at the Saint John’s Anglican Church Cemetery in Wolfville, NS.  Donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or Valley Regional Hospital.   {dcOct2017gd} [zsp]

Spr Roy Henry Delbeck (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Roy Henry Delbeck (Ret'd) of Moose Jaw on 27 January 2011 at the age of 88 years.

Born in Edmonton AB, Roy moved to Moose Jaw as a child and began working with the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in 1940. He joined the Army in 1942 and was took his Basic Army Training at the 102th Canadian Army (Basic) Training Centre in Regina.  He saw action in Europe with the Second Battalion R.C.E. from Toronto and later came home with the 14th Field Company. He returned to work with the CPR in 1946 and retired in 1984.

The Funeral Service will be held at W.J. Jones & Son Chapel on 4 February 2011 at 1:30 pm. Interment will follow in the Veterans' Section of the Rosedale Cemetery in Moose Jaw. Memorials to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund, 268 High St.W.., Moose Jaw, S6H 1S8, would be appreciated. In living memory of Roy, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Spr Roger Campeau (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Roger Campeau (Ret’d) on 26 January 2011 at the Glen-Stor-Dun Lodge in Cornwall, ON at the age of 87 years.

Roger was a veteran of the Second World War and served in the Royal Canadian Engineers.  He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, John McMartin Memorial Branch #297 in Cornwall.

Wilfred Ernest Pike

We regret to advise of the death of Wilfred Ernest Pike at Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital, on 22 January 2011 in his 88th year. Wilfred's early military career was as a Sapper before he transferred to the Royal Canadian Regiment.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, 26 January from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Gilpin Chapel, Thedford , ON. Funeral service will be on 27 January at 1:30 p.m. at Knox Presbyterian Church.
