Col Pierre Sasseville will retire from the Canadian Military Engineers on 29 August 2026 after more than 42 years of dedicated service to Canada. His service brought him across Canada, into Europe, Haiti and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Col Sasseville joined the Canadian Forces in 1984 with the Régiment du Saguenay and quickly distinguished himself by finishing first on his infantry qualification course. After completing parachute training, he served with the Regiment’s Parachute Company and regularly participated in major exercises with the Canadian Airborne Regiment and the Royal 22e Régiment in Germany. He was promoted through the non-commissioned ranks, reaching Sergeant in 1989.
En 1989, il a été muté au 10e Escadron du génie de campagne où il a occupé plusieurs postes clés, notamment sergent de reconnaissance et adjudant de troupe. Promu adjudant-maître en 1997, il est devenu le sergent-major du 10e Escadron du génie.
Commissioned as a Captain in 1999, Col Sasseville completed the Land Staff Command Course and later attended the prestigious Officier de la Réserve Specialiste d’État-Major staff course in Paris, where he subsequently served as an instructor. Promoted to Major in 2005, he held key operational and planning appointments, including Civil-Military Cooperation Commander and Planning Officer with the United Nations mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).
Diplômé du Collège d’état-major de Toronto en 2008, il est promu lieutenant-colonel en 2009 après avoir servi comme G3 Coordination et G3 Réserve. Il a commandé le 34e Régiment du génie de combat de 2009 à 2012 et a occupé des fonctions opérationnelles importantes lors de l’opération HESTIA en Haïti ainsi qu’au sein de la MONUSCO en République démocratique du Congo, où il sert comme officier de liaison et commandant adjoint du quartier général avancé.
From 2013 to 2015, he commanded the 2 Canadian Division Operational Support Element while also contributing to the Military Personnel Management Capability Transformation Project as Requirements Manager. He later assumed senior leadership positions within the Directorate of Human Rights and Diversity and the Directorate General Integrated Conflict and Complaint Management, serving as Director External Review, where he was promoted colonel in November 2020. As Director of External Review, Col Sasseville built an impressive reputation for having assembled a team of subject matter experts able to advise senior CAF leadership in matters regarding human rights.
À l’extérieur de ses fonctions militaires, le colonel Sasseville pratique le kendo et le iaido et agit comme instructeur-chef du Club de kendo d’Ottawa. Il est depuis longtemps avec Josee Fortier et il est le fier père de Guillaume.
