After more than 28 years of loyal and dedicated service to the Canadian Armed Forces and the Canadian Military Engineer Branch, LCol S. Nith, CD, retired on 5 January 2026. LCol Sam Nith joined the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in 1997 under the Regular Officer Training Plan (ROTP) and graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada in 2002. For his first posting to Quebec City, he joined the 5 Regiment du génie de combat in 2003 as a Field
Troop Commander. He was then posted to St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, from 2005 to 2012, where he served within the Construction Engineering Services and at the CF Leadership and Recruit School.
Promoted to the rank of Major in 2012, he served as the Base Construction Engineering Officer at Valcartier until 2015, before being posted to Ottawa to support the centralization of the real property portfolio with ADM(IE), until 2017 to be posted to the Canadian Joint Operations Command (CJOC) within the J Engr section.
Promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 2019, he took command of the Real Property Operations Unit (Quebec) and will return to CJOC in 2022 with the J3 team, where he will oversee and manage iternational missions until 2025.
During his career with the CAF, Sam participated in two missions (Afghanistan in 2007 and in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2024) and supported various domestic operations (Ice Storm, floods, COVID-19).
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, a Master’s degree in Defence Studies and is a graduate of the Joint Command and Staff Program.
Following his retirement in January 2026, Sam joined NORAD Modernization Infrastructure delivery team as a Project Manager. He wishes to sincerely thank his spouse, Shandy, and his daughters, Elysa and Lyviana, for all their support throughout his career.
