John Baptiste Ontoine Bataller

We regret to advise of the death of John Baptiste Ontoine Bataller on 24 February 2011 in Victoria, BC, at the age of 84 years. John was born in Cape Breton, NS, and initially joined the Canadian Army in 1944 as an Infantryman Signaller and later transferred to the Royal Canadian Engineers. John then spent most of his Engineer career as a Heavy Equipment Operator at Chilliwack and retired from the Armed Forces in 1975.

A remembrance ceremony will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Cemetery, 10010 Hillcrest, Chilliwack on 12 March 2011 at 1:00 pm followed by a fellowship gathering at the Royal Canadian Legion, 9350 Mary Street, Chilliwack. The family asks that in lieu of flowers that any donations be made in the name of John Bataller to the Broadmead Care Foundation, www.broadmeadcare.com

John Mead Jack Buchanan

We regret to advise that John Mead Jack Buchanan passed away peacefully on 29 January 2011 in the Cowichan District Hospital. John was born in Trail, BC in 1916, attended St. Michael's School in Victoria, BC and then The University of Washington where he graduated with a degree in metallurgical engineering in 1941. Jack then commenced his career with Cominco in Trail before enlisting with The Royal Canadian Engineers in September 1941.

Following the war Jack returned to Trail where he became superintendent of the zinc plant. He went on to become manager of metal production and finally assistant manager of Trail operations. From 1964 to 1967 Jack worked in India where he was responsible for establishing a zinc smelter for Cominco Binani Zinc Company.

Jack was active in community affairs in Trail: he was a member of the Trail Library Board and was president of the Rotary Club and The United Way and also served as Civil Defense Coordinator for Trail and District and was a member of the Tadanac Municipal Council. Jack retired from Cominco in 1981 after forty years of service. In 1990 he moved to Duncan, BC.

Sgt Bob Burr (Ret.)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Bob Burr (Retd) on 16 December 2011 in Chilliwack, BC. Bob had served the Royal Canadian Engineers as a Mechanist, RCE and was living at the Cascade Lodge in Chilliwack.

A Memorial Service will be held at Woodlawn Mount Cheam Funeral Home, 45865 Hocking Ave, Chilliwack at 1330 hrs Friday, 6 January 2012. If friends so desire, Donations may be made to either the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation in memory of Bob.

William David Buxton Sr., CD (Ret.)

We regret to advise of the death of William David Buxton Sr., CD (Retd) in Bangor, Maine, on 29 April at age 68 after a short battle with cancer.

Born in England during World War II to a war bride and a Canadian serviceman, he arrived in Canada at the age of 2 with the family to live in British Columbia. He later moved to New Brunswick as a teen where his father was involved in the building of Canadian Forces Base Gagetown.

After schooling he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers and later transferred to the Royal Canadian Dental Corps. William's military years saw him living in various places in Canada and Europe. In 1972 he took his release from the Dental Corps to start his civilian career as a denturist.

In his civilian life, William was involved in the denturist movement in Canada, holding many positions provincially, nationally, and internationally, while owning denture clinics in New Brunswick at Fredericton, Woodstock, Minto, Sussex, Petitcodiac and Havelock. In 1998 he moved to Maine to help establish New England Denture Centers. Bill was a former councillor with the town of Sussex, NB.

Services will be announced at a later date to be held at Pushaw Lake with interment to be in Fredericton, NB. Those wishing to remember Bill in a special way may make gifts in his memory to any local animal shelter.

Spr John Cave (Ret.)

We regret to announce the death of John Cave of Vernon, BC, on 15 January 2011 at the age of 68 years. John joined the Royal Canadian Engineers wiith the 8th Sapper Apprentice Intake in 1959. He was laterly known by the name Ty King. At his request, there will be no public Funeral Service. Cremation arrangements are in the care of Vernon Funeral Home.

Cpl Gregory Glidden Cromwell (Ret.)

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Gregory Glidden Cromwell on 24 September in Digby General Hospital at the age of 62. Born in Digby, Greg served 25 years in the military, both in the Air Force and in the Army as a Field Engineer, retiring in 1992.

Visitation is 2:00-4 :00 PM and 7:00-9:00 PM on Tuesday, 27 September at Jayne's Funeral Home, Weymouth North, NS. Funeral Service 2:00 pm 29 September at St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church, Southville.

Roy Henry Delbeck

We regret to advise of the death of Roy Henry Delbeck of Moose Jaw on 27 January 2011 at the age of 88 years. Born in Edmonton, AB, Roy came to Moose Jaw as a child and began working with the CPR in 1940. He joined the Army in 1942 and fought in Europe with the Second Battalion R.C.E. From Toronto, later coming home with 14 Field Company. He returned to work with the CPR in 1946 until retiring in 1984.

The Funeral Service will be held at W.J. Jones & Son Chapel on 4 February 2011 at 1:30 pm. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. Memorials to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund, 268 High St.W., Moose Jaw, S6H 1S8, would be appreciated. In living memory of Roy, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

Spr Kenneth Everett Stanley Denty (Ret.)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Kenneth Everett Stanley Denty at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville , ON, on 24 August 2011

Born in 1937 in Nova Scotia, Ken joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and later transferred to the Royal Canadian Engineers and served in Chilliwack, Germany and Petawawa. After twenty one years of service he retired and for a while lived in Cobden Ontario, later moving to Whitby, where he lived with his family. Funeral service will follow in Indian Harbour, NS. Details will follow when available.

Ivan Drake

We regret to advise of the death of Ivan Drake, a Royal Canadian Engineer WW II veteran on 28 March 2011 in his 91st year at the Perley Rideau Veterans Health Care.

Remembrance Service will be held on Thursday, 7 April 2011 at 10:00 am in the Chapel of the Perley Rideau Veterans Health Care Centre. Memorial Donations may be sent to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Trust Fund or the Creative Arts Department of the PRVHCC.

CWO Bruce Vernon Duncan, CD (Ret.)

We regret to advise of the death of Chief Warrant Officer Bruce Vernon Duncan (Retd) on 9 December 2011 in his 72nd year after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born in Bienfait, SK, Vern had a full 35 year career as a Military Engineer, starting as a Navy Hull Technician before he remustered to a Plumber and rising to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer in the Construction Maintenance Technician trade. After retiring he ran a successful home inspection business for many years in Chilliwack with Byron Worthylake.

A service of remembrance will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday,15 December at Sardis Fellowship Baptist Church at 45187 Wells Road, Chilliwack, BC. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Cpl Braden Broderick Durette

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Braden Broderick Durette of St Albert, AB and formerly of Hopewell Cape, NB who passed away unexpectedly at his residence on 29 September 2011 at the age of 26. Cpl Durette was a member of 1 Combat Engineer Regiment.

At the family's request there will be no visitation. A military funeral service, for family and friends, will be held at the Albert County Funeral Home on Wednesday, 5 October 2011 at 1400 hrs. Following the service a gathering with family and friends will be held in remembrance of Braden at the funeral home.

In Braden's memory donations to the Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Department or to the Salvation Army would be greatly appreciated by the family.

Maj Don Edgecombe CD (Ret.)

We regret to advise of the death of Major Ralph Donald (Don) Edgecombe (Retd) on 18 Apr 2011. Don served with the ADM (IE) Group until September 2009 after a Military Engineer career.

At Don's request there will not be a funeral service. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, 30 April, at 11:00 a.m., at the Hulse, Playfair and McGarry Funeral Home, 315 McLeod Street, (at O'Connor), Ottawa. There will be a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.

LCol John Francis Feller, CD (Ret.)

We regret to advise of the death of wLieutenant-Colonel John Francis Feller, CD (Retd) on 24 June 2011 away after a lengthy illness. John was born in the Netherlands in 1952 and immigrated to Canada with his family before his second birthday' He grew up in Lethbridge, AB. and started an interest in the military in his youth with the Navy League Cadets. He enrolled in the Canadian Forces in 1970 ans attended Royal Roads Military College in Victoria BC and The Royal Military College in Kingston ON graduating in 1974 with a degree in Civil Engineering.

John's military career included postings with 1 Combat Engineer Regiment and various bases in Canada. He was seconded to the British Army in 1980 and served in the United Kingdom (including a stint as an instructor at the Royal School of Military Engineering) , Germany, Denmark and Austria. Upon his return to Canada in 1984 John was posted to the National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa. Among his responsibilities he developed a Canadian Airfield Damage Repair capability in Europe. During this period he also trained at the United States Navy Explosive Ordinance Disposal School and participated in exercises in the United States, Germany and Norway. John retired from the Regular Force in 1991.

From 1991 to 2004, John held the position of Director of Facilities Services for Cariboo College [now Thompson Rivers University]. He joined the Rocky Mountain Rangers in 1992 and served as the Deputy Commanding Officer and then as the regiment’s Commanding Officer from 1994 to 1999. Following his appointment as Commanding Officer, John served with the 39 Canadian Brigade Group Headquarters in Vancouver as well as the Land Force Western Area Headquarters in Edmonton. He returned to full-time service as an army Reservist in 2004 serving as Transitional Planning Officer and as liaison to Joint Task Force Pacific. In 2007 John was appointed Commander Task Force Freetown in the Republic of Sierra Leone, Africa. Upon returning to Canada, he was involved in the support of the 2010 Olympic Games. Following this duty he again took command of The Rocky Mountain Rangers for a second time in 2009 until his passing.

A military funeral for Lt.-Col. Feller is planned for Sunday 3 July when he will be interred with full military honours. Funeral services will take place at 3:00 p.m., St. Paul’s Cathedral, 360 Nicola St, Kamloops, BC. Procession from the church will immediately follow. Afterwards, there will be a Reception starting at 5:00 pm at the Rocky Mountain Rangers Armoury, located at 1221 McGill Road for anyone wishing to attend.

Col John Gordon Forth CD, P.Eng, BASc, BEng, (Ret.)

We regret to advise of the death of Colonel John Gordon Forth CD, P.Eng, BASc, BEng, (Retd) on 9 June 2011 in Ottawa after a short battle with cancer.

Col Forth enrolled in Royal Canadian Air Force Reserve in 1948 under the University Reserve Training Plan and started his university training at Joint Services Colleges in Kingston. The next Fall he transferred to the Canadian Army Reserve and continued his university education.under the Canadian Officers Training Corps program. In 1952 he transferred to the Canadian Army Regular with the Royal Canadian Engineers, graduated from Royal Military College that year and underwent Officer training. Upon completion of his officer training he joined 23 Field Squadron in Korea, as Reconnaissance Officer and Troop Officer.

Returning to Canada in 1953, he attended University of Toronto to complete a Bachelor of Chemistry degree and in 1954 he was posted to The Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering as Troop Commander in Apprentice Training Squadron. After a short tour Captain Forth moved on to 1 Airborne Troop RCE in Calgary in 1955 as Second in Command and was later appointed Officer Commanding (1956 - 58).

After a tour as Second in Command of 24 Works Company at Camp Borden he attended the Canadian Army Staff College in Kingston. From there was posted to the Office of Chief of Engineering at Army Headquarters. On completion of this assignment Major Forth was appointed Commanding Officer 1 Field Squadron (1962 - 64) and then remained in Petawawa for another year with the Army Tactics and Organization Board.

Completing the Petawawa tour,in 1965 LCol Forth proceeded to Headquarters, Mobile Command, St Hubert, QC, as Senior Staff Officer, Field Engineering and in 1968 as Acting Command Engineer. The next year Col Forth proceeded to Canadian Forces Headquarters as Director Construction Engineering Requirements and, in 1970, became Director Military Engineering. After some language training in Quebec City, he returned to Headquarters, Mobile Command as Deputy Chief of Staff, Requirements. and was subsequently appointed Commandant, Ecole des Langues des Forces canadiennes, CFB St Jean, QC (1972 -75).

Col Forth returned to language training in 1975 as a student at Canadian Forces Foreign Language School on Japanese language training. He subsequently held appointments as Canadian Forces Attache to Seoul, South Korea (1976-1978) and Tokyo, Japan (1976-1980). After these two tours he returned to Ottawa as Deputy Director General Properties and Utilities (1980 - 82).

Retiring from the Canadian Forces in 1982, Col Forth initially worked for about a year with the Petroleum Monitoring Agency of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources before moving to Carleton University where he spent 16 years as Assistant Dean of Engineering. Following retirement he served in various voluntary positions

A memorial service will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, 439 Queen Street, Ottawa ON, at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 15, followed by a reception in Cathedral Hall. Internment in the Christ Church Cathedral Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, donations to Harvest House, Christ Church Cathedral Foundation, or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Cpl Antonio Girimonte

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Antonio Girimonte, 24, a Combat Engineer with 5e Régiment du Génie de Combat, Valcartier, who died on 19 April 2011 after a long courageous battle with cancer. Corporal Girimonte was born in East York, ON in 1986. He enrolled in the Canadian Forces as a Combat Engineer in April 2006 and, after completion of his Basic Engineer Training at Chilliwack, BC, was posted to Régiment du Génie de Combat, where he served his career. Public visitation will be on Tuesday 26 April from 17h00 to 20h00 and Wednesday 27 April from 10h00 to 13h00 with Funeral Service to follow at 1300hrs at Glendale Visitation Centre, 1810 Albion Road, Etobicoke, ON (416-679-1803).

Major R. Stanley Goat, CD (Ret.)

We regret to advise of the death of Major R. Stanley Goat, CD (Retd) on 6 January 2011. Born in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, in 1927, Stan was evacuated to Canada 1940 under the U.K. Government's wartime "Children's Overseas Reception Board Scheme" and spent the war years at Sackville High School and the University of New Brunswick where he graduated 1947 - BSc Civil Engineering. He joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1947 and served a full career in a variety of appointments in Canada (including the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering and the Northwest Highway System), USA, England, Germany, and in Viet Nam with the International Commission for Supervision and Control.

Stan retired in 1975 with the rank of Major and moved to England . He toured extensively in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Western and Central Europe and the Middle East for a period of six and one-half years. Returning to Canada in the late 1981, he traveled Canada, the United States, and Mexico for a further three and one-half years and then settled in Ottawa in 1985.

Following cremation, interment will be in The National Military Cemetery (Beechwood). In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the charity of your choice.

Elmer Jeremiah Hicks

We regret to advise that Elmer Hicks passed away peacefully in Moncton on 4 July 2011 at the age of 92. Born in Valcartier Village, QC. Elmer attended Valcartier School and the Commissioners High School in Quebec City. In 1941 he enlisted in the Canadian Army and then served with the Royal Canadian Engineers for 30 years. His postings included Victoria, Fredericton and Oromocto.

After retiring from the military Elmer worked for the Oromocto Development Corporation as manager of properties and then worked for ten years at the University of New Brunswick. Elmer was a very active member of his community and among Retired Sappers.

A service to celebrate Elmer’s life will be held on 8 July at 2:00 pm at the St. John’s Anglican Church 70 Broad Road in Oromocto. Visitation will be July 7 from 6:30-8:30 at the Oromocto Funeral Home in Oromocto. Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 93 will hold a tribute service Thursday at 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Donations in memory of Elmer may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of your choice.

John James "Jack" Kilby

We regret to advise of the death of John James "Jack" Kilby suddenly on 18 March 2011 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria at age 72.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of Jack’s life will be held at McCall Brothers Floral Chapel, Johnson and Vancouver St. On 25 March 25 at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

Paul S.K. Leung

We regret to advise of the passing of Paul S.K. Leung, on 11 June 2011. Born in Hong Kong in 1929, Paul emigrated to Winnipeg, MB in 1952. He attained a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Manitoba in three years and later acquired a M.Eng from the University of Wisconsin. After working for a number of independent firms in Syracuse, Montreal and Ottawa he joined the Chief of Construction and Properties group at National Defence Headquarters. Paul retired as the Director of Construction Engineering in 1994.

According to his wishes Paul will be cremated. Friends and relatives are invited to attend an informal gathering in honour of his memory at the Beechwood Visitation Centre 280 Beechwood Ave. Ottawa on Sunday, 19 June between 2:00 and 4:00pm.

Sgt John MacAulay (Ret.)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant John MacAulay (Retd) in Edmonton on 22 June 2011 at the age of 82 years after a lengthy battle. Formerly of Glace Bay, NS, John had served 25 years with the Canadian Forces and was a veteran of the Korean War.

A Celebration of John's Life will be held on Tuesday, 28 June at 2:00 PM at the Evergreen Funeral Chapel, 16204 Fort Road, Edmonton, with viewing taking place one hour prior. Interment to follow in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Donations in memory of John may be made to the Canadian Lung Association, Alberta Cancer Foundation or to charity of one's choice.

Edward Malinsky (Ret.)

We regret to advise that Edward Malinsky passed away in Taber, AB on 15 December 2011 at the age of 83 years. Ed was born in Taber and attended school grades one to twelve in Taber after which he journeyed to British Columbia where he was employed in a logging camp on Vancouver Island as a Signaller (whistle punk). Ed enlisted in the Canadian Army in March 1948 and served until October 1968 with the Royal Canadian Engineers as a Clerk Accountant. During his service he was posted to bases in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick. He also served in Korea during the Korean War, West Germany, Egypt and two and a half years with the Airborne Engineers.

After retirement from the Armed Forces he was employed with the Burndy Canada Ltd. Supply and service office for seven years in Calgary. In 1975 he returned to Southern Alberta and Lethbridge where he secured employment with the Canada Post Office and remained there for the next eleven years. In 1986 he transferred to Vancouver, working for two years in the Vancouver Mail Processing Plant. In August 1988 Ed requested early retirement and moved to Kelowna, British Columbia. He remained in Kelowna for one year after which he was most happy to return to Lethbridge.

Ed was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Taber Branch, Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans Lethbridge Branch, Korea Veterans Association of Canada, Lethbridge Y.M.C.A. for twenty years and the Federal Superannuates National Association.

A private family burial service will be held at the Taber Memorial Garden on Wednesday, 21 December 2011. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Ed’s name may be made directly to the Taber and District Health Foundation, 4326 - 50 Avenue, Taber, Alberta T1G 1N9.

Cpl J.A. McAlpine, CD

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal James McAlpine, CD, a Geomatics Technician with Mapping and Charting Establishment, Ottawa, who died while participating in a Regional Hockey Tournament in Valcartier, QC on 8 February 2011.

James McAlpine was born in Oromocto, NB in 1979 and enrolled in Ottawa in September 1998. He chose the Infantry as his first career and completed basic training in St-Jean before being dispatched to CFB Valcartier to begin training at the Battle School. After graduation he joined the 2nd Battalion of Royal 22nd Regiment. His deployments include Bosnia-Herzegovina as part of Roto 10, OP Palladium in 2002 and Afghanistan as part of OP Archer in 2006-2007.

James was promoted to Sergeant in December of 2007. Geography and applied sciences always greatly interested James and led to his remuster to a Geomatics Technician and becoming a member of Mapping and Charting Establishment.

Visitation will take place at Kelly Funeral Home, 585 Somerset St West, Ottawa on Friday 18 February from 1400hrs to 1700hrs and 1900hrs to 2100hrs and Saturday morning 19 February from 0800hrs to 1000hrs.

Funeral Mass will be held Saturday 19 February at 1100hrs at the Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica, 385 Sussex Dr, Ottawa. The internment ceremony will be held Saturday 19 February at 1230hrs at Beechwood National Military Cemetery at 280 Beechwood Ave, Ottawa. Reception at Beechwood following interment.

James McAlpine est né le 28 mai 1979 à Oromocto et est décédé le 8 Février 2011. Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse, Jessica ainsi que son enfant à naître, ses deux frères et ses parents. Son père étant un officier de l’artillerie, James a déménagé à plusieurs reprises durant son enfance, mais comme la majorité de sa famille habite à Ottawa, il a toujours considérer la Région de la Capitale Nationale comme étant son chez-lui.

Pendant plusieurs années, James s’est familiarisé à plusieurs sports, mais ses deux passions étaient le hockey et le football. Il a joué au hockey à des niveaux compétitifs jusqu’à l’âge de 17 ans et il a continué sa carière de hockeyeur avec l’équipe de son bataillon à Valcartier.

James s’est joint aux Forces canadiennes le 2 septembre 1998 au centre de recrutement d’Ottawa à l’âge de 19 ans. Son choix s’est orienté vers l’infanterie. Après avoir complété la formation de base à Saint-Jean, il a été muté au centre d’instruction à Valcartier pour sa formation de fantassin. Après avoir gradué, il s’est joint au 2e Bataillon du Royal 22e Régiment. Après avoir été promu au rang de sergent en décembre 2007, il a été transféré du peloton de reconnaissance à un peloton d’infanterie. Il se comptait chanceux d’avoir passé toute sa carrière de fantassin au sein de la même unité, ce qui lui a permis de connaître la plupart des membres du bataillon.

James a été déployé à plusieurs reprises, entre autre en Bosnie-Herzégovine, avec la roto 10 d’Op PALLADIUM, en 2002, et en Afghanistan avec l’Op ARCHER en 2006 et 2007. Durant cette mission, il était cantonné à Kandahar avec l’ELMO. James était fier de l’expérience qu’il a acquis pendant cette mission, particulièrement en ayant travaillé, vécu et combattu avec l’Armée Nationale Afghane.

La géographie et les sciences appliquées ont toujours intéressé James et l’ont amené à apprendre et à exceller dans son nouveau métier. Il cherchait constamment à se dépasser. Il avait à coeur de partager son expérience avec ceux qui n’avaient pas été exposés à la vie militaire. James appréciait et respectait les changements et les défis qui lui étaient présentés et s’adaptait pour mieux les surmonter.

Que ce soit lorsqu’il était au bataillon ou au S Carto, James aimait ses camarades de travail. L’armée était pour lui une grande famille. Il était fier de son métier et cherchait toujours à se dépasser peu importe les tâches et les défis que ses supérieurs lui attribuaient.

Cpl Archie McLellan (Ret.)

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Archie McLellan (Retd) at the Cascade Hospice in ChilliwackBC, ion 12 April 2011.

Archie was a farm kid who was born in Wolseley, SK in 1926. He joined the navy during WWII at the age of 16 and served his country for three years. In 1948 Archie joined the Royal Canadian Engineers and was posted to Chilliwack. His career included two tours with the UN in Egypt and one tour in Germany. After his discharge from the military he worked in construction with Kel-Mor and Chilliwack Sand and Gravel. He was a 51-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 4.

A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, 23 April 2011 at 11:00 a.m. At St. John’s Anglican Church, 46078 Higginson Road, Chilliwack. No flowers by request.

If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Chilliwack Hospice would be appreciated.

MCpl Richard Millner (Ret.)

We regret to advise of the death of Master Corpral Richard Millner (Retd) on 24 September at the Chilliwack General Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Camp Lister, BC in 1937, Richard was a Heavy Equipment Operator often known as "Dog". He is well remembered for his skills as an Operator and the contributions that he made to major construction projects like the Chilliwack Lake Road and the Eagle River Bridge. Richard retired from the Canadian Military Engineers in 1986. In retirement he was a strong supporter of all things Sapper and regularly attended the Retired Sapper Reunions and the Royal Canadian Engineer lunches and dinners.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Alano Club, 46035 Victoria Ave., Chilliwack on Saturday, 1 October at 1:00 pm. Interment will take place in Lister, BC on Saturday, 8 October, t 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity of your choice.

Roy B. Mitchell

We regret to announce the death of Roy B. Mitchell on 27 October 2011 in his 90th year. A WII Veteran, Roy served a long career with the Army Survey Establishment/Mapping and Charting Establishment, retiring in the early-1970s. He was a longtime volunteer at CNIB and CHEO.

Roy Stewart Murphy

We regret to advise of the death of Roy Stewart Murphy on 25 November 2011 at 77 years in Surrey, BC. Born in Westville, NS., Roy served with the Royal Canadian Engineers in Canada and Korea from 1951-1961. After retirement from the Canadian Forces Roy settled in BC and worked for BC Hydro, Pacific Stage Lines, International Stage Lines and Charter Bus Lines. A Farewell Service will be held, Saturday, 14 January at 2:00 pm. At First Memorial-Fraser Heights Chapel-14835 Fraser Highway, Surrey.

Captain Ronald Eugene Nason, CD (Ret.)

We regret to advise of the death of Ron Nason at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital on 6 November 2011. Born in 1936 in McAdam, NB, Ron served a full 35 year career with the Royal Canadian Engineers.

A Memorial Service will take place at York Funeral Home/T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel on Thursday, 10 November at 11:00 am.. Interment will take place at Forest Hill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society and would be appreciated by the family.

Wilfred Ernest Pike

We regret to advise of the death of Wilfred Ernest Pike at Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital, on 22 January 2011 in his 88th year. Wilfred’s early military career was as a Sapper before he transferred to the Royal Canadian Regiment.

Spr Jason Rickard

We regret to advise that Private Jason Rickard died at the age of 21 years as a result of a motor vehicle accident on 8 September 2011.

Jason grew up and attended school in North Bay, ON, graduating from Widdifield Secondary School.. He was an Air Cadet with 547 Canuck Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron. Jason joined the Canadian Forces in 2010 as a Reservist with 22 Wing Air Reserve Flight, working in the Engineer Section as a carpenter technician. He followed his father’s footsteps by joining the Canadian Military Engineers and was travelling to attend his course at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in Camp Gagetown, N.B., on his way to becoming a qualified carpenter.

Major Peter Sandham (Ret.)

We regret to advise of the death Major Peter Sandham (Retired) on 15 May 2011 in Victoria, BC after a brief illness. Born in 1922, Peter was educated in St. Catharine's, ON and went on to the University of Toronto to become a civil engineer. Peter enlisted in the RCAF during WW II and trained as a pilot with his first solo flight being in November 1943. He was released from active service in January 1945 and returned to university to finish his degree - becoming a Professional Engineer in October 1948. Peter was the first military Base Construction Engineering Officer at CFB Esquimalt (1966 to 1971). He retired from the military in 1971 and was an active member of the CMEA Victoria Chapter.

A service will be held at the First Memorial Funeral Chapel, 4725 Falaise Dr., on 14 June at 2:00 pm.

Sgt Lloyd Clive Scrimshaw (Ret.)

We regret to advise of the sudden death Sergeant Lloyd Clive Scrimshaw (Retd) at the Prince George Hospital on 15 February 2011 in his 69th year. Formerly of Orillia, ON, Lloyd served his country at home and abroad with the Royal Canadian Engineers.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Lloyd's life will take place in June 2011 in Prince George, B.C.

MWO Ivano Scolli (Ret.)

Ivano Scolli graduated from the cartography program at Algonquin College and was employed by Kenting Earth Sciences. He enlisted in July 1980, took his recruit training at Cornwallis, and reported to Mapping and Charting Establishment in September 1980 as a direct entry private. In 1988 Ivano completed the TERA course at Fort Belvoir, USA in 1988 and was promoted to Warrant Officer in May 2001.

Cpl Daniel Siklos

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Daniel Siklos suddenly of natural causes on 9 September 2011 at his home at the age of 23. Daniel was a valued member of 32 Combat Engineer Regimennt, Toronto since 2004.

Funeral service will be held at Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel, 2401 Steeles Avenue West on Wednesday, 14 September at 1:30 p.m. Interment Kol Ami Section of Pardes Shalom Cemetery. Shiva visits begin Wednesday following the interment, until 5:00 p.m., and will resume with the evening service at 7:30 p.m., until 8:30 p.m. Visits on Thursday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. And 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Visits on Friday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. At the family's request, the remainder of shiva will be observed privately.

William Sinclair

We regret to advise of the death of William Sinclair in Cowichan District Hospital on 29 August 2011 at the age of 76 as a result of complications associated with ALS. Bill was a Topographical Surveyor who took part in a wide variety of field survey parties with Mapping and Charting Establishment establishing ground control in Canada in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and the Yukon and was also on one of the first helicopter parties using Tellurometers in the High Arctic. He also was also an exchange Non-Commissioned Officer with the British Forces in Singapore where, accompanied by armed guards, he surveyed the Malay/Thailand border.

After his retirement from the Canadian Forces Bill moved to Regina where he was a partner with the firm Prairie Mapping. At this time he also served as a Lieutenant with the 16th Militia Service Battalion. He then moved to Victoria where he taught Cartography at Comosun College. Upon retiring from his second career, Bill moved to a seven acre hobby farm on the outskirts of Duncan BC where he lived doing the things he most loved to do; restoring old cars and tractors among his many other hobbies.

Sgt Kelly Smith, CD

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Kelly Smith, CD, a firefighter with 19 Wing Comox, who died at home on Sunday 5 Jun 2011 at 50 years. Sgt Smith had served the early part of his 25 year Canadian Forces career as an Infantryman with the Royal Canadian Regiment before transferring to the Canadian Military Engineers and becoming a Firefighter. His career included postings to many locations including Petawawa, Baden, Winnipeg, Comox as well deployments to Cyprus (1964 and 1986) and Afghanistan (2005 and 2007).

The funeral of Sgt Kelly Smith will take place on Saturday, 11 June at 1000 hrs at the Protestant Chapel Lazo, BC. The Chapel is located beside the arena on Military Row just outside 19 Wing Comox.

CWO Robert William Squires, CD (Ret.)

We regret to advise of the death of Chief Warrant Office Robert William Squires, CD (Retd) on 11 December 2011 suddenly at the St. Boniface General Hospital in Winnipeg, MB. Bob was born in St. Vital, MB and joined the RCAF in 1967. Through the years working in the field of Construction Engineering with an Electrical Generating Systems specialty, he traveled to various military bases throughout Canada and abroad. He quickly rose to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer and retired in 1997. In 1998, Bob joined the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires and worked security at the Virology Lab, The Grain Commission, Grace General Hospital and, up until his sudden passing, the Passport Office.

Funeral service will take place 15 December at the Chapel of Memories in Wojcik's Funeral Chapel, 1020 Main Street at Manitoba Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob's memory may be made to the Salvation Army, a charity dear to Bob's heart.

Scott Stec

We regret to advise that Scott Stec passed away at the Ottawa General Hospital, on Friday, 4 November 2011 at the age of 32 years after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a member of Mapping and Charting Establishment.

The family will receive friends on Monday, 7 November 2011 at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road, Ottawa after 11:00 a.m. Followed by a Memorial Service in the Chapel at 1:00 p.m. In memoriam donations to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre Foundation would be appreciated.

LCol James Irving "Bing" Thompson MiD, CD (Ret.)

We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant Colonel James Irving (Bing) Thompson MiD, CD (Retd) on 10 April 2011 in Ottawa at age 92 years. A Royal Canadian Engineer WW II Veteran, he played a great part in the historic development of modern mapping science. His careers included first as a Hydrographer, then as a Military Surveyor and pioneer Arctic Mapper. He also obtained prominence as a leader in developing Canada’s Foreign Aid mapping program.

Bing Thompson was born in Lynden, ON and graduated from the University of Toronto in 1939. He then began a short-lived career with the Canadian Hydrographic Service that came to an end in May 1941 when he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers. He trained for a year in surveying and photogrammetry at the Geographical Section of the General Staff at Rockliffe before embarking overseas in May1942. He saw service with the Canadian (Air) Survey Company a unit that, using photogrammetry, acquired map information ahead of the Allied front lines. He was Mentioned in Dispatches after the Rhine Crossing for his role in the rapid mapping of enemy territory.

Capt Thompson returned to Canada in 1945 and entered the Directorate of Operational Research at the Department of National Defence in Ottawa. His team adopted the WWII SHORAN (Short Range Aid to Navigation) radar system for use in the accurate mapping of Northern Canada for the first time.

In 1947 Maj Thompson was posted to the newly created Army Survey Establishment (ASE) in 1947 where he was responsible for developing photogrammetric techniques for employing SHORAN in northern surveys. In January 1947 he led the first Army Survey winter survey party into the North, along the coast of Hudson Bay, to map the new Fort Churchill Arctic Training area. Living and working in severe weather conditions they completed this work in two winter seasons.

In 1953 he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel and became Commanding Officer of Army Survey Establishment until 1959 after which he went on to head the External Aid Mapping Programme of the Federal Surveys & Mapping Branch.

Alexander Wilfred "Pat" Thorne

We regret to advise of the death of Alexander Wilfred "Pat" Thorne at his residence in Southampton, ON, on 11 May 2011 in his 85th year. Formerly of Sydney, NS, Pat was a Veteran of WWII who enlisted in the Permanent Force after the war.

Southampton Legion Branch #155 hosted a Memorial Service at the Eagleson Funeral Home on 15 May. A Funeral Service to Celebrate the Life of Pat Thorne was conducted at the Salvation Army Temple, Owen Sound, on 16 May 2011 with a Time of Fellowship and Sharing following the Service. Louis Woodfine

We regret to advise of the death of Louis "Woody" Woodfine who passed peacefully away at the age of 55 at Carbonear General Hospital in Newfoundland on 31 October 2011. Born in Northern Bay, NFL, "Woody" served his career in the Canadian Military Engineers, first as a Field Engineer and later remustering to Stationary Engineer. He completed his Basic Field Engineer training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in 1975 and was then posted to 3 Field Squadron. A tour with 4 Combat Engineer Regiment in Lahr, Germany (1979 - 1983) followed and he then remustered to Stationary Engineer shortly after his return to Canada.

Visitation at Noel's Funeral Home, Main Highway, Western Bay on Wednesday, 2 November from 12:00 noon to 9:00 p.m. Cremation to follow. Inurnment to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, donations in his memory may be made to the North Shore Central Ambulance Fund.
