The interests of all serving CME members are well-represented through the Canadian Forces chain-of-command, and those interests are always represented to the Government of Canada by the Chief of Defence Staff.
However, serving members of the CF are usually constrained in any public debate of contentious defence and security policies, whereas CMEA members, particularly those no longer in uniform or employed by the government, are able to express military engineering considerations publicly whenever appropriate. There are many examples in Canadian history when poorly informed or consciously biased views have tried to dominate the public debate of national security, and in such situations, the CMEA does not believe that the interests of the CME members should be ceded by default. |

THE CONFERENCE OF DEFENCE ASSOCIATIONS
The Conference Of Defence Associations (CDA) is the oldest and most influential advocacy group in Canada's defence community. A non-partisan, independant, non-profit organization of some thirty-one associations from all parts of Canada, CDA (in conjunction with its member associations, affiliates and the CDA Institute) researches issues and expresses ideas, findings and opinions with a view to influencing government security and defence policy.
Through CDA, the CMEA sustains its formal inherited responsibility dating back to 1912 to advise the Government of Canada, as required, on all Military Engineering matters. The CMEA remains a valued member of CDA for many long-standing valid reasons:
-
CDA membership helps all members of the greater CME Family to remain informed of current security and defence issues that impact not only on the CME, but on all Canadians.
-
CDA membership enables the CMEA to ensure that military engineering priorities, factors and concerns are incorporated in any policy recommendations that CDA may present to the government.
-
CDA membership enables the CMEA to ensure that any unique CME requirements or interests are included in the overall CDA promotion of the well-being and efficiency of the Canadian Forces.
-
CMEA membership in CDA facilitates timely access by all the other associations to informed military engineering advice so that their resultant recommendations have the benefit of multi-disciplinary input, and thereby reflect balanced harmonized advocacy.
